Burke Lakefront Airport’s Future In Holding Pattern Until After Midterms
Fans attending the annual Cleveland National Air Show last weekend made it known that they don’t agree with civic leaders who want to close the airport and repurpose nearly 450 acres of city-owned lakefront land. The air show, one of the oldest in the nation, attracts nearly 77,000 fans to Burke Airport each year, bringing in roughly $1.4 million in local and state tax revenues. Thousands of additional spectators, toting lawn chairs and coolers, line the surrounding streets for free. “I don’t think this is a show you wanna lose,” pectator Chris Skelley told ABC News 5. “And I don’t see how it can continue if the airport isn’t here.” That’s the conclusion the nonprofit air show’s board of trustees reached earlier this year. In a 10-page document submitted to Cleveland City Council in June, the organization said the longstanding air show cannot survive, in any form, if Burke closes its doors.

Reports of two unauthorized drones interfering with aerial firefighting last week caused Arkansas firefighters to stop fighting wildfires from the air, delaying response to wildfires and increasing risk for ground crews. The suspension of aerial support means fire suppression may take longer. Ground crews must now rely solely on surface tactics. No details about the drones or their operators have been released.The Arkansas incidents are the latest examples of a persistent problem facing aerial firefighting operations across the United States, according to the Aerial Fire website. Despite years of public messaging, enforcement efforts and restrictions surrounding wildfire incidents, unauthorized UAS continue to interfere with fire aviation.
Light-Aircraft Manufacturer Blackwing Now Taking Orders From US Customers
Swedish light-aircraft manufacturer Blackwing has started accepting orders from U.S. customers for aircraft intended for the FAA’s expanded MOSAIC framework. The company is also clarifying that its current European aircraft remain within national microlight and light-aircraft categories rather than EASA Part 21 type certification. The development creates a new U.S. sales channel for the manufacturer as MOSAIC expands the scope and capability of aircraft eligible for light-sport category certification. Blackwing is quoting an estimated delivery time of 18 months for U.S. MOSAIC aircraft. The manufacturer also states that almost 50 Blackwing aircraft are currently operating across Europe.
Jet Collided With Two Vehicles Carrying At Least 8 Occupants
Federal regulators said the two crew members aboard the Amazon cargo jet that hit two vehicles while going off the end of a runway at Miami International Airport on Sunday survived the accident. The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) provided the update during a Sunday press conference after officials said the cargo plane overran the runway and caught fire while landing. The crash killed five people and injured five others, authorities said Sunday. The jet collided with two vehicles carrying at least eight occupants, according to NTSB Chairwoman Jennifer Homendy.

The FAA is proposing a long-overdue modernization of its medical-certification standards that could eliminate the automatic Special Issuance process for thousands of pilots whose diabetes is successfully controlled without insulin. Under current regulations, an applicant diagnosed with diabetes requiring insulin—or any other hypoglycemic medication—is considered to have a specifically disqualifying condition. Even when the condition is stable and well controlled, the applicant must normally be deferred by an Aviation Medical Examiner, or AME, while the FAA reviews the case and determines whether to grant an Authorization for Special Issuance.
