Cost of living crisis Budget 2023: Pensions and social welfare will be front and centre

  1. >The Government is considering one week’s extra payment to those collecting their pension and those on State benefits.

Doesn’t apply to me but fair play.

    >The Green Party is also rallying for an increase in the threshold for the working family payment, to allow parents to earn more and still qualify for the payment of at least €20 a week. Currently the payment is calculated on household income and the number of dependents within a home.

    >It is also expected there will be changes to the taxation on petrol and diesel, and moves on GP care and other healthcare.

    >The Government is set to extend current fuel tax cuts and reduce the VAT rate for electricity.

This and another €200 off the electricity bill apply to me and at least they are trying….

  2. I am all for increasing the pension, carers allowance, disability allowance etc. but people on Jobseekers shouldn’t be getting anything extra.

There are plenty of jobs available, jobseekers is supposed to be a safety net, not an excuse not to work.

We can have a separate talk about pay and conditions but the state should not be paying for people who just couldn’t be bothered working.

  3. The €200 back for electricity bills is important because it makes higher earners feel they get at least something back. Like I get a €25K bonus, state takes 52%, please at least give me €200 back for my bills and let’s call it a deal

  4. So people on the dole get looked after before people who are out working 🤔 how does this incentive people to get a job?

  5. So nothing for the average working Joe and Jane aye? 🤔 I’m all for supporting pensioners, low income families but can’t we milk the working minority a little less for a change? Jack up the corporate tax a few percent for a change …

  6. What about all the poor working people??
Poor working people can’t ask for help or assistance as they make just enough to scrape by. Punished for working.
