I think the distortion for population size doesn’t bring anything to this map: It just makes it more difficult to view the classifications of countries.
I think there would be better solutions to show the data. In this case even a normal chart would have done…

Lebanon is a hybrid regime, not just merely a weak democracy. Hezbollah is larger and better armed than the official lebanese army and exerts de facto political control over most of the country’s decision making.
Hard to believe any data that says Mexico is mid-range performing democracy.
