UK doctors call for free abortions for Americans unable to access them

  1. Abortion should be treated the same as any other type of healthcare. So the question is, should we also offer kidney stone removal free to anyone in the world who needs it?

  2. Although this is a lovely idea I can’t really forsee this benefitting many people. The abortion ban is going to disproportionately affect the poorest communities in America, so I doubt there will be many who could afford the cross Atlantic flight when they could drive or fly internally.

  3. Why don’t we focus our efforts and tax payer money helping people HERE first? That money could be spent on a million important things domestically, why do we always have to try and solve the worlds problems?

America made a decision on abortion. I don’t agree with it, like alot of people. But guess what? That’s not our problem. We’re British, not American and it has NOTHING to do with us.

Sorry but I’m sick to death of the hand wringing protests over EVERYTHING that has nothing to do with us.

I don’t pay my taxes to help people in other countries, I pay them to keep THIS country going.

End rant. Bring on the down votes, I don’t care

  4. They could open consulates in Red States and turn them into abortion clinics but I have a feeling that would get shutdown by the Federal Government. Mostly because it would be seen as an ally directly embarrassing the American Government and doing what it failed to do despite having a majority in both The House of Representatives (commonly just called Congress) and The Senate.

  5. Why would this even be necessary?

So my understanding of the situation (which I admit may be incorrect) is that the SC striking down Roe v Wade does not suddenly make abortion illegal throughout the US. What it means is that those states which want to ban abortion (the regressive Republican ones) can now do so. But as I understand it there will still be plenty of Democrat states where abortion will be available. So in theory, someone would just need to go to another state to get an abortion which would be much more practical than coming to the UK. What I *can* see the anti-abortion states trying next is to put laws in place to make it illegal to travel out of state for the purpose of getting an abortion, but that would apply to going to other countries too. I suppose it could be done here without anything going on their medical record, which reduces the risk of prosecution, but that’s the only advantage I can see to travelling to a foreign country.

  6. Concentrate on the healthcare for the citizens of the UK. Always amazed at how much the NHS happily heals the world but you can’t get a GP appointment or basic procedure done in a reasonable timeframe

  7. Why on earth would Americans come all the way to the UK to get an abortion when they can just go to another state where it is legal? This whole thing is just stupid.

  8. No. They need to deal with their own problems themselves.

Our health care is on its knees as it is and we most certainly don’t want to get involved in politically charged issues in the shithole that is the United States of America.

  9. Help the struggling British people before we help anyone else, Americans or otherwise. We can barely give medical treatment to our own citizens I don’t see how we can fit in people from abroad.

Also why would they come all the way here when they can go to another state or cross the border to Canada or Mexico and get one there instead. It’s cheaper and easier

  10. What makes abortion services any different from the hundreds of other treatments which 31 million uninsured Americans have no realistic way to access?

I get that this is coming from a place of great compassion but given the scale of the problem with healthcare in the US, I don’t see how picking just one treatment for special access really helps.

  11. Those who are not ordinarily resident in the UK, including former UK residents, are overseas visitors and may be charged for NHS services. Treatment in A&E departments and at GP surgeries remains free for all.

  12. Can we get the NHS working properly for UK citizens before we let the world have access to it?

There’s plenty of states in the US that will give them access to abortions. People do realise that they’re not being banned in the US, don’t they?
