Objectively he is right in saying we can as a society only accommodate so many refugees. I heard another TD on the radio a few weeks ago getting filleted for saying so. It was my own personal least favourite TD Mattie McGrath.
I mean I dislike the Healy Rae’s, and am okay with immigration. I support Ukraine and think we should accommodate as many refugees as possible. But there shouldn’t be a issue with asking questions about any part of this process. On the radio Mattie McGrath was making a point that many people are thinking ….how many can we accommodate and will this affect our ability to help people already living in Ireland. The only answer he got from the other side was a reminder that Ukraine is in a bad situation and we have to help. Now I agree, and I reckon we need to help as many as possible. But objectively, even if you believe we should take as many as show up, Mattie’s questions deserve a straight answer. Asking the question doesn’t make one racist.
It’s a little bit late to be talking about imposing caps now. It’s a bit like closing the stables gate after the horse has bolted. Already broken public housing, health and education etc systems add even more demands placed on them and are broken further.
It’s an open goal for these lads.
Every party in the Dáil on both sides of the aisle and virtually everyone in the media is so excessively liberal on this issue that all the independents have to say to stand out and get noticed is ‘you know there might be limits to how much we can take’.

The comments on this thread make me ashamed. Just as a reality check, Ireland ranks 124th in the list of countries by population density. Denmark is more densely populated, and that’s essentially a big mountain with some bits of coast around the edges. Sadly our ranking in the world racism competition seems to be climbing.
It may shock people here to learn that one or two Irish people have emigrated to escape extermination, historically.
Get a fucking grip people.
1. We take one of the lowest numbers per capita for an EU nation.
2. The vast majority will be temporary guests. They want to go back to their homes.
3. We do have the resources to support them. Tying healthcare or housing issues into this is only a way to score points and scapegoat.
Does it make it easier, no, would them going home resolve it, no.
Can we put a limit on the number of Healy Raes in the Dail? Big feed = over the alcohol limit…. Moron
They have obviously fully rented their properties now and don’t need any more in their local areas for whatever reason.
