These people are essential for society to function. Without them other systems will fall apart. They’ve been under paid for a long time. 15% puts them back before inflation rised which was low balled and means in a few months they’re worse off again.
People’s lives depend on these people doing their job. The government depends on these people doing their job. Yet they’re paid as if they’re part time car washers.
Simple solution. Surcharge tax on civil barristers to pay for criminal barristers.
“fees for representing defendants who cannot afford to cover the costs themselves”.
in other words, the offer is a distraction to the problem of the government very much likes the idea of plebs not being able to access professional representation.
Such a misleading headline, yes they’ve been offered 15% but this is pre-inflation, and it’s for new cases only not existing, which won’t end up being paid until circa 2024, meaning inflation will have wiped and even exceeded the figure completely.
They’re rightly never going to go for this. Government has chronically cut and underfunded this sector for too long (same as every other) and they’ve had enough – fair play to them, I hope they have the resolve to dig in ✊
Can they also get rid of the wigs and gowns? It’s 2022 for crying out loud.

Well that was easy.
