Anyone here from France had an expired ID before traveling and did this document help?

  1. Salut,
Our ID cards (wife and I) are expired as well, and the administration refused to grant us the renewal. Reason given was “it is still valid in France”. As usual, it was useless to argue and explain that we are moving to Norway: ” C’est comme ça, point!”.

I heard many times the document you posted a picture of is irrelevant abroad, and many got into troubles when they presented it outside of France. Could only be some bad luck cases though… anyway, I wouldn’t risk it. We use our passports and that’s it.

Oh, and I read a French here who tried to use its “European health insurance card” (our European version of Carte Vitale to use while travelling) in Norway, and the person at the pharmacy had no idea what that thing was… despite the instructions we are all given here in France to absolutely bring one with us.

  2. I don’t have any direct experience with this, but seeing this document I would very much doubt that it would help if you were stopped for ID control at the border. If it were some kind of signed certificate stating that your ID card number xxx is still valid it might be a different story, but the way this piece of paper looks it could just as well be something you wrote yourself (not saying that it is, just how it looks).

However, it is quite possible that Norwegian border agents have been informed through official channels that France has extended the validity of the ID cards, in which case they will accept those ID cards – but then not because of you carrying this document, but because they already were informed of it.

My suggestion: Contact the French embassy in Oslo and ask them. They should know whether Norwegian authorities will accept expired IDs.

  3. If you can just get on the plane, there will be no immigration check when arriving in Norway from France, both countries are in Schengen.

I would just ask the airline, my guess is that this is no problem.

  4. Normally you don’t even have to show any ID when entering Norway from France. The only case you will need it is if you are stopped in some sort of random check. I don’t think you will have any problems at all with using your “expired” French ID card and that letter.

We are currently having problems with shortages of new passports in Norway, and the Norwegian government has been working hard to get other countries to accept expired Norwegian documents. This is something that everyone in Norway that reads any news at all have heard about.
