‘Sand batteries’ could be key breakthrough in storing solar and wind energy year-round

I heard about breakthroughs in batteries (lithium-metal, graphene, quantum, lithium iron phosphate, silicon anode on top of my head) several times the latest 5-10 yrs but I’m not sure why they never made the light of day in mainstream technologies AFAIK. Anyone educated about this topic can explain why?
