RTE doing a DIY SOS style housing show for Ukrainians apparently. One builder not so interested.

  1. RTÉ phoned a volunteer builder today about a DIY SOS TV show they are doing, the builder has one condition, listen and share

  2. It’s not the Ukrainians fault, but no matter what way you cut it, some people are gonna feel sour that the government ignored the biggest shift in people becoming homeless here, but wanna impress there European counter parts by taking in an insane amount of refugees while still ignoring a housing issue here.

  3. So his condition was that it would have to be half Ukrainians, half Irish people that were being helped – I think that’s fair enough to be honest

  4. “The Irish homeless probably won’t read as well on camera as their Ukrainian counterparts, I mean who wants help people with mental health and addiction issues, that’s a sort of grey area and fairly uncomfortable viewing, but like, WARTORN, that’s hot!”

  5. Its disgusting how Ukranians have become a commercial property. I heard an ad for some conference a while ago and one of the selling points was that it had “experts from Ukraine”. We’ve gone from sorrow and pity for these people to wanting a gawk and slapping our own backs about how we’re such good boys and girls.

I really, really, really do not enjoy using this term but its virtue signaling shite like this show that drive people demented.

  6. And sure what about then Ukrainian who came here from America and set up a business here with loads of free stuff to get her started, fairly sure she was given a free retail unit , madness

  7. What will be interesting once the conflict dies down is what will happen to the extra housing capacity that has been dedicated to the Ukrainians – they will eventually leave. I am going to make the wild assumption that the government will then hand over the additional spaces to the private sector or the developer mates…because…reasons and the homeless will get the shaft yet again.

  8. We (europe) are at war with russia. Their are women and children getting raped, people getting killed and their homes literally getting blown up. We are fucking deluded if we think that what is happening here is on a par with what those poor women and children have gone through.

Their was a report recently that there are a significant number of russian spys in ireland. Russia sees Ireland as being strategically important due to its close proximity to the uk.

  9. Not surprising. The establishment have put Ukrainians on a high pedistill. Far higher than you average refugee, higher than the Irish working class, higher than the middle class? Who knows with these people.

  10. The last few series have all been about supporting Irish people who need it, those who had sudden onset disabilities ETC. The show format is literally about helping those who need it at a specific time. They arn’t ignoring Irish people, they are just focusing on the Ukrainian crisis this time round. No doubt they’ll be back to Irish people next time. It’s actualy not a big deal, either you want to participate or you don’t, either way is fine, but don’t make such a deal over a non issue.

Edit: just looked at the Twitter account, why am I not surprised she’s a covid conspiracy theorist. But people here happily play into her agenenda because it’s RTE

This country has a serious media literacy problem, you have groups who’s sole aim is to discredit/ defund RTÉ. Or as they call it, Fake News RTE. People here happily retweet and share without thinking about the consequences

  11. Fuck that emotional blackmail, “I literally spoke to someone whose brother had his face shot off and literally spoke to another who…” – while she sits at a desk trying to get people for a show and she doesn’t give two shits about those poor people involved, just wants to create a show with emotional moments and move onto her next project.

  12. The fact of the matter is it’s not the Ukrainians fault that our government don’t care about housing the Irish population . Our government have resided over this housing crisis long before the war in Ukraine. It’s not a either/or type situation and anyone depicting it this way is misguided or appealing to your worst sensibilities. There is more than enough material and financial wealth in this nation to house everyone, there is no political will to do so under the current regime.

  13. Fair play to that man, he has his heart in the right place. Well done for standing up for the Irish

  14. I saw this show last year and they were helping Irish families. And the year before that if I remember correctly. I don’t see the problem with doing a season focusing on Ukrainians given what’s going on.

  15. “But what about…”, that great old excuse not to help people. I’m sure there were people in Britain campaigning to stop exporting our food in 1845 and others that refused because Britain had their own hungry people. The view in this video has a surreal lack of Irishness in it and I find it pretty disheartening that there are so many in the country like this.

  16. This honestly just seems like an excuse to get mad at RTÉ. I see no problem letting a show that normally focuses on Irish people needing housing now focusing on Ukrainian people needing housing, it’s just simply deciding to focus on a current pressing issue

I hate RTÉ and a south dub accent as much as the next person (though maybe not looking at some of these comments) but I am really struggling to see how this is anything worth raging over

  17. He was really respectful and got a very reasonable and accurate point across. Fair play to him.

I definitely don’t understand the ins and outs of all of this but it seems insane that they couldn’t make this project about both Ukranians and Irish in need.

  18. It’s weird that nearly everything connected to the video and from the page is racist af

Edit: Click on the vid and go to the page, see for yourself

  19. Oh what a prick

Just call this what it is, plain racism. Trying to act all self righteous “but what about the IrIsH hOmElEsS” despite us hearing fucking CONSTANTLY that developers, builders, companies aren’t the mildest bit interested in building affordable housing, the one thing the housing crisis fucking needs as a start, because it isn’t profitable.

But oh suddenly they take a privileged stand for the homeless when it comes to helping to house people fleeing a war torn country when almost our entire history is Defined by emigration.

  20. I think the builder has missed an opportunity, if they the government can be convinced to use the Ukrainian situation as a blueprint on how to build new or repurpose old buildings fast it could solve a lot of housing issues, and homelessness. The show is all about getting things done quick.

If the builder thinks refusing to help will make any difference he’s mistaken.

If your not part of the solution then your part of the problem.

  21. I saw this video on FB the other day. Couldn’t finish it, I was cringing too hard. He’s making a stand! To share on Social Media? Nah.

But it was being shared and applauded. And I can understand why people feel the way they do. I feel dreadful for the Ukrainians. Should we be helping them? 100%. But why can’t we help Irish people too? The negative feelings amongst Irish people is the fault of the Government. We are at breaking point. And I fear we can’t go back.

In the last few weeks alone I saw a disabled elderly woman, who needs 24hr care wait 8hrs for an ambulance. 8 hours! 999 was called around 12pm. The ambulance came near 8:30pm. She lives in Ballyfermot. St. James’ is basically around the corner. And no, she couldn’t get a lift/taxi and wait in A&E for hours.

I donate to a particular Homeless Soup Run, and since they are low on volunteers (summer!) I’m going to start cooking/baking too. This soup run cannot keep people fed. The queues are just too much. More and more people are living on the streets/hostels/B&B’s without access to a kitchen and hotels. Plus, they are donating to more and more families in houses who can’t pay bills and feed their families.

Need a doctor? Dentist? Other vital service? Wait a week. I have literally had a two week week lately for my 4 year old son.

I am paying €3000 to get a proper diagnosis for my disabled son. I’ve been waiting for 2 1/2 years. I can’t keep waiting. But this assessment isn’t until September because even in the private sector waiting lists are as long as your arm. Other places told me it would be a year. And I’m forking over thousands. And although my.son was referred to a full disability team last October, he hasn’t been seen by any specialist at all.

Need to buy a house? Rent? Good luck!

I got my electricity bill on Friday. Its the highest bill we’ve ever gotten. Ever. We are very light on the electric, we don’t have a dishwasher etc. But it’s still flying up. We have oil heating. The prices to even half fill the tank have shot up.

I am a single Mother to a special needs child. I also care for my elderly Mother. My Mother was meant to get hip surgery two years ago. But oh no, covid took over every hospital, every surgeon? Every consultant? What? So she lives in agony every second of every day. We can’t afford €20000 to get it done privately. I don’t even get carers allowance.

Life is tough. And getting worse. People are bitter and that’s understandable. And they will get pissed at who they perceive to be taking away services. But again, we need to blame the proper culprits. And it isn’t the people fleeing war.

These kinds of videos only serve to get people riled up. So that guy can f right off. But so can RTE. Seriously.

    End rant.
