Opinion: Are we ready for a return to Blair’s Macron-style radical centrism?

  1. Yes we are. We’re just waiting for Sir K to die, probably from a heart attack while in the bath and then a new charismatic leader will take over.

He / she / they will adopt a radical new style of politics and at the next GE kick out John Major’s corrupt Tories.

  2. If the Lib Dems manage to get their PR deal with Keir, that would be some radical centrism which would improve things, otherwise it’s all pointless. Love or hate Blair, we still ended up here, what does that tell you?

  3. Radical centrism was always an oxymoron. Radicals normally advocate fundamental change. The political centre-ground is inhabited by those who seek to preserve the status quo. You cannot be both a radical and a centrist.

In the early days of his premiership, Blair had some success in presenting himself as a radical when radicalism suited the occasion. But his political instincts were always those of a conservative neo-liberal. Blairite phrases such as “radical centre” and “third way” were part of a lexicon which was intended to obfuscate and deceive.
