5 acres? That’s 32 square meters per car parking space…
And wouldn’t it be closer to 12 buses for 1000 people?
So 250 people in 1 train carriage!!!!!
I’m calling Shenanigans on that.
Move them from where to where?
If it’s moving people from somewhere I’m not at, to somewhere I’m not going to, then it’s not going to be much use to me.
And that’s the problem with public transport.
Excludes the last mile.
If only the train fit in my garage.
What train cart contains 150 passengers?
And that’s assuming each car has 1 person.
BS detector is going off the charts here.
Assuming they are all going to the same place at the same time

Cars are fundamentally unsustainable and we need to stop trying to make them sustainable
This graphic always annoys me because it compares cars at average occupancy, to trains at “overcrowded” – no 4 carriage train (especially in Ireland) can carry 1,000 people, and 1,000 people would fit in 200 cars if we were comparing like with like. Also there is no way 625 cars need 5 acres of parking, especially because car parks are something Ireland actually doesn’t mind being multi-storey. I’m pro public transport but there’s no need to *make up* figures to show that public transport is a better idea than driving
So this is being reposted again.
Yes you can fit that many people on a train, though it will not be comfortable. Think rush hour green Luas busy.
The specific train mentioned in the graphic is from Seattle, but to put it in Irish terms. A 40m Luas can hold about 360 people. An 8 car Dart is about 170m long. Which is over 4 times as long, so even accounting for more spaces used for drivers cabs and seats you can easily fit a thousand people in.
Buses aren’t very economical if there are only 1 or 2 people on them. There is the issue. There will never be public transport for my 30 mile rural commute.
This post kinda goes to show the complete disconnect between the 20 something urbanites and others who live rural. It’s same as the multiple posts this week complaining about people who drive ford rangers and are pissed with diesel costs. The usual 22 year old socialist have zero clue that maybe the driver of the Ford Ranger actual needs a big car for work, farming, construction etc and the cost of diesel has screwed them and their family into the ground.
There’s absolutely no way 250 people fit in a car on a train. More like 70ish seated. 100 if you allowed for standing passengers.
It takes 6 hours by public transport to go from Cavan to Galway
Don’t hold your breath. I am certain nothing will be done. He have heard promises for two decades now. And even the one scheduled for 2035 will not really change things to where they should be. Our car obsessed culture is reflected in how the cities are designed and operated.
I spent 15years getting the bus to work. I changed job, the new office is 2k further away but there is onsite parking. My commute time is half, now that I can drive. Quality of life is far better. I’m saving 5hrs of time weekly from not getting the bus.
I get the message but I hate the maths applied here.
I agree with the logic but the figures are misrepresented. Train and bus options are considered full to maximum possible capacity but cars are counted as having just 1 or 2 people in them. If they’re going to say 250 people in this perfect world example fit in a train carriage then they should be allowing for 4 people per car. I get the bus to work and it is rarely full.
250 cars Vs 1 train or 15 buses is still a hell of a ratio. No need to manipulate the numbers.
