Nicola Sturgeon’s plan to hold a second referendum on Scottish independence has suffered a setback after a poll found more than half of people in Scotland do not want a ballot to be held in October next year.
Ms Sturgeon, the SNP leader, has said she intends to hold a re-run of the 2014 vote on October 19, 2023.But when asked whether a referendum should take place in October next year, 53 per cent of people said it should not and 40 per cent said it should, with the remainder undecided.
The Savanta ComRes poll for The Scotsman represents a hammer blow to Ms Sturgeon as tries to build momentum for her new referendum.
The UK Government is refusing to grant permission for the vote and Ms Sturgeon has asked the UK Supreme Court if Holyrood can hold the ballot without the backing of Westminster.
Ms Sturgeon is expected to be grilled on her referendum plan when she takes part in First Minister’s Questions at Holyrood at noon.

> Nicola Sturgeon’s planned date for a second independence referendum does not have the backing of a majority of Scots, a new poll has suggested, in an early blow to the freshly-announced strategy.
And I can’t find the poll results via Savanta ComRes either. It looks like they post them on their Twitter but I can’t see one about this.
What proportion of Scots want Brexit or a Tory government?
What proportion of English for that matter?
UK democracy often brings outcomes the majority don’t want.
Having said that, I’m pro-indie but still think next year isn’t the right time.
I must say, something like 20 years after the first would make more sense. If there’s one every nine years, then your average person can vote in 6/7/8 of those in their lifetime? That seems absurd.
Well then more than a half of Scots are gonna be disappointed then – Democracy always wins.
Scotland has a CLEAR mandate for another Referendum plain and simple.
If thats the case then vote No at the Referendum then.
What we need is a vote to see if there should be a referendum.
So conflicted with this.
My opinion flip flops constantly because I recognise that continue referendums until you get the result you want is undemocratic. The SNP aren’t going to have a referendum 10 years after to rejoin!
At the same time a lot has changed since the last election. Probably more so then any point since WW2. There is also a valid arugement that SNP winning elections is a mandate. Everyone knows that’s SNP no1 policy, so a vote for them is effectively a vote for independence.
It’s a hard opinion to hold either way.
If true the SNP will be destroyed next election, anyone voting for them must know they are also giving the go ahead for (at the very least) a referendum. Lets see what happens.
Pick your poll and take your choice. One says most Scots favour independence, another say not. As I’ve said before, polls are not worth the paper they are written on
I’m pro-independence and I don’t want it. Polls suggest there’s been almost no change in support for independence since 2014, having one so soon is just an exercise in further division. I’m all for the mechanism being set up that allows us to move quickly when and if the winds of public opinion change, maybe that should be the focus?
There were so many lies and broken promises back in 2014. The people of Scotland deserve to have another referendum on the matter. If this is blocked democracy is dead in the UK which should concern everyone not just the People that reside in Scotland.

But how many Scots want a vote? That’s the real question here.

Does anyone have a link to this poll?
