I used to think swimming was mandatory in all German elementary schools, but apparently it isn’t, according to a poster in this article. If anyone knows any details regarding the law, could you elaborate? Is there some sort of exception clause for schools that don’t have easy access to pools?

  1. First of all: we have 16 states, abd as such, 16 school systems. Which stuff exactely is to be covered at each grade in each subject, including sports class, can differ from state to state.

Afaik, swimming is not optional in sports class, at least it was not when i went to school in BW and Bayern. However, access to pools is limited, so it is often limited to a few weeks per year and to the lower grades.

  2. Generally toy knowledge it is mandatory. How much it is though my differ.
Also keep in mind that every state may give a different answer as this is a state matter.
