ATHENS. Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis is traveling to the United States with a particularly packed schedule of meetings combining foreign policy, the Cyprus issue, Greek-Turkish relations, investment, technology and the Greek-American community. The centerpiece of the visit will be his presence in New York for the 81st High-Level Week of the United Nations General Assembly.

The visit will take place from September 21 to 25, beginning in San Francisco and continuing in New York, where the Prime Minister will address the UN General Assembly on the afternoon of Thursday, September 24.

The speech from the United Nations podium is expected to be the main political event of the visit. Mitsotakis is expected to address international crises and Greece’s role in the Eastern Mediterranean, while particular attention will be paid to his references to Greek-Turkish relations and the Cyprus issue.

Athens attaches particular importance to the timing of the visit, as relations with Ankara continue to move between dialogue and persistent disagreements on a number of critical issues. The Greek side is expected to reiterate its longstanding positions on respect for international law and the Law of the Sea.

The scheduled meeting between Kyriakos Mitsotakis and UN Secretary-General António Guterres on Thursday is also of particular importance. The Cyprus issue is expected to be at the center of the discussion, at a time when efforts continue to create conditions for the resumption of substantive negotiations.

However, the Prime Minister’s presence in the United States is not limited to diplomacy. The economic component is also particularly prominent, with the government seeking to capitalize on the improved international image of the Greek economy to attract new investment. In New York, Mitsotakis will meet with institutional investors and leading figures in the financial sector, conveying the message of a Greece seeking a stronger presence on the international investment map.

The economic and technological component of the visit begins in San Francisco, where on September 21 and 22 he will meet with executives from high-tech companies and Greeks active in Silicon Valley. He will also visit Stanford University, where he will participate in a closed-door event hosted by the Hoover Institution, with former U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice also taking part.

The Greek-American community has a distinct place on the agenda. On Wednesday, September 23, the Prime Minister will attend a luncheon co-hosted by 28 Greek-American organizations at the University Club of Manhattan and will deliver remarks. Among the organizations represented at the event will be AHEPA, HALC, PSEKA, AHI, HANC and HACC.

During the luncheon, Mitsotakis will confer honors on six distinguished members of the Greek-American community for their services and contributions to Greece: Dr. George Dangas, Athina Krommyda, Ioannis Koudounis, Michail Amoridis, Patrick Theros and Dina Titus. The announcement was previously presented to the Greek-American press by Greece’s Consul General in New York, Ifigeneia Kanara.

The ceremony adds a further symbolic dimension to the visit, linking the Greek Prime Minister’s presence at the United Nations with recognition of the contributions of members of the Greek diaspora and strengthening the Greek-American dimension of the trip.

The New York schedule also includes participation in an event on artificial intelligence at Columbia University, attendance at the OceanEye initiative, meetings with foreign leaders, representatives of international media organizations and executives of major American Jewish organizations.
