U.S. President Donald Trump is calling fears of artificial intelligence (AI) and data centers a hoax, and said Saturday he is creating an “AI Force” and will soon appoint an “AI czar.”
Trump talked about AI and data centers in a social media post Saturday.
He is countering concerns about AI decimating workers’ jobs and machine learning models ‘going rogue,’ as well as community opposition to new data centers to power the technology wave.
“I, as President of the United States, will not stand by and let this happen,” Trump said, comparing fears about AI and data centers to his skepticism about global warming and climate change.
“It all began with an attack on our Data Centers, until people realized how wealthy and prestigious they were for the Communities in which they were built,” Trump said in a Truth Social post.
“Higher Salaries, Lower Taxes, and Safer Streets, was the result, and the crazed Data Center attack has largely failed, so now, in much the same way as they changed the term ‘Global Warming’ to ‘Climate Change,’ in that it covers a much larger “territory” of doubt, they are going straight at AI. We will not in any way hinder or stifle the growth of this incredible industry. Rather, we will cherish it, help it, and watch over it, as it grows,” Trump continued.
There are dystopian fears about AI, autonomous robotics and machine learning decimating jobs and taking over military and security systems, as well worries about new data centers’ water and energy use.
Public opinion polls show bipartisan AI worries, but Democrats are more concerned about AI and opposed to data centers than Trump supporters.
Trump said the U.S. government will use the criminal and civil justice systems to keep tabs on bad AI actors, but also said he is forming a new “AI Force.”
“I am forming the AI Force, much like I did Space Force, which has been a tremendous SUCCESS, in my First Term. To that end, I will be announcing, in the near future, the AI “Czar” — Only High I.Q. individuals need apply! AI is the next Industrial Revolution, or Internet, but will be even larger and more impactful, possibly as much as 25% of our Country’s GDP. We are leading China, and the rest of the World, and I intend to keep it that way!,” Trump said in the social media post.
