Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian warned President Donald Trump that Tehran would not bow to “bullying” on Wednesday, declaring that Iranian “resistance” would only grow as he fired back at Trump’s threat to “annihilate” the Islamic Republic.
Speaking at the United Nations General Assembly in New York one day after Trump’s address, Pezeshkian accused the president of abandoning the principles of international diplomacy and said military pressure would only harden Iran’s position, but that Tehran was “ready for dialog.”
“If we truly seek to have an order based on international law and standards, it must be based in justice, common human will, uplifting human dignity because a peace that does not encompass all is no peace and fairness and justice that does not embrace all is not worthy of being called justice and fairness,” he said. “But going back to the words of the president of the United States yesterday shows those who are experts in international law and dialog and diplomacy and basic human standards that everything uttered about our country goes against the very essence and charter in the spirit of the United Nations.”
He continued: “He must know that the resistance of the Iranian people will only increase in the face of sanctions, increased pressure, increased bullying. We will never bow our head or bend at the knee.”
“Iran must be understood by Mr. Trump and those who seek to bully us that we are ready for dialog and diplomacy and negotiations without accepting the language of force,” he concluded.
The U.S. delegation walked out at the beginning of Pezeshkian’s address, according to AFP and Reuters, as he accused the U.S. and Israel of “terrorism.”
His remarks came one day after Trump used the same UN stage to present Tehran with a stark choice between a negotiated settlement and further U.S. military action, openly weighing the decision between a “deal” that “lets them rebuild” or him moving to “annihilate the Islamic Republic.”
