Romania travels to Solna on Friday as it prepares to go up against UEFA Nations League foe Sweden for the first time in seven years. National icon Gheorghe Hagi faces his first competitive fixture in charge of of the Tricolours more than a quarter of a century since his first spell in charge of the team came to a close.
Hagi was reinstalled as head coach in April and has gone undefeated in two friendly fixtures thus far, drawing against Georgia before beating Wales back in June. However, he’ll face a step up in competition when he takes his side to the Strawberry Arena to take on Graham Potter’s men in Group B4 of the Nations League.
Former Chelsea and Brighton boss Potter gets back to business after Sweden bowed out of World Cup 2026 in the round of 32. The Blue and Yellow suffered a 3-0 demolition against France at MetLife Stadium, which extended Sweden’s streak to 15 games in a row without a clean sheet.
Potter’s attack will be led by Premier League duo Alexander Isak and Viktor Gyokeres, though he’ll be without the talents of Newcastle United winger Anthony Elanga. Meanwhile, Hagi’s son, Ianis, should form part of the attack, which will be missing injured FCSB forward Denis Dragus.
