Scottish independence: 19 October 2023 proposed as date for referendum

  1. Is she going to listen to the Scottish people if this goes ahead, or will she just keep demanding more referendums if she doesn’t get the result she wants?

There also needs to be a major discussion about the question used. The remain/leave question gets much more union support than the yes/no question. We need to explore why this is.

  2. Just be aware, this is almost certainly a positive publicity stunt. This referendum will not take place because almost certainly the British Government won’t consent to it. Also the U.K. Supreme Court is very unlikely to side with the Scottish government because it’s pretty clearly written into legislation that it needs Central Government consent.

What it does do though, is nicely build up steam for a referendum that won’t likely take place, just at the point where a 2024 Election campaign will be gearing up. So ‘their stolen independence referendum’ will be front and centre in Scottish minds.

It will also play perfectly for the Conservatives, as it means a Labour minority would need to negotiate with the SNP, and thus be a great PR point for the Tories media against another ‘coalition of Chaos’.

2024 is shaping up to be war of the populists.

  3. >If the court rules that a referendum would not be legal without formal UK government approval, she said the next general election would become a “de facto referendum” with the SNP standing on a single issue of independence.

Given that its unlikely that the Government will agree, and there isn’t much chance of the courts agreeing that a referendum would be lawful, the above might get quite interesting if it is used to undermine the ‘You can vote for the SNP without supporting independence’ thing.

Although arguably it’s a bit of a daft notion, after all you can’t just designate a GE to be a referendum in independence either, and it seems unlikely that the SNP would end up with a majority in any case. It might also create some interesting questions about campaign rules, especially if the Scottish Government is campaigning for independence and linking that directly to voting for the SNP….

  4. Well, at least the legal question will be filed with the Supreme Court. Wonder how long it will take to rule on?

But basing the matter on a GE isn’t going to solve anything either, is it?

  5. Oh look, the Engsplaining has begun again.

I love it when I’m told the FACTS about my country by people who occasionally pop here as tourists.

  6. To be fair, they have a clearer mandate this time than in 2014, so have at it.

SNP ran with the clearest policy, hold a Independence Referendum in this sitting.

Labour, Conservatives ran with No independence Referendum.

SNP won with a LARGE majority.

  7. Publicity stunt. She wants a deal with the largest party if its a hung parliament. Which will be perfect mantra for the Tories. The SNP need the Tories.

PretendyRef couldn’t be more accurate here. She knows its not getting through Westminster.

  8. After the shitshow we’ve had from the tories since the last referendum it’s hard not to see why Scots may feel like leaving is the best option.
I don’t see an end to Tory governance, do you?

  9. Excellent news.

We have been putting power into the hands of the party which will deliver another referendum in huge numbers for over a decade now, so I have no idea why people from the rest of the UK are surprised-pikachu-facing this.

People mockingly say that we will have endless votes on independence until Yes wins, and… yeah? Kind of? Of course we will unironically keep pushing for referenda on this indefinitely while it is an SNP policy. This is quite literally what we voted for and what we keep voting for.

As always the door is open and the invitation is there for people from the rest of the UK who want to move up and join us. This is the best opportunity we have of getting rid of the Tories and their toxicity from our lives and rejoining the EU.

Yes at any cost, at this point.

  10. Thread fulla English folk saying this won’t happen as the government won’t allow it, and are happy to just accept that frightening premise as absolutely fine. Bootlicking cunts.

  11. Wouldn’t leaving the uk kinda screw Scotland pretty hard at first? If they got back into the eu I suppose they would be ok? But if London started gutting financial support wouldn’t Scotland suffer pretty hard? I dno maybe someone could add something as I don’t have a clue but find it all very interesting lol

  12. Even if it does get allowed and its a 90% remain she’ll continue to demand referendums for as long as she lives because she cannot accept when she’s when things don’t go her way. Its a waste of time and money and imo it just distracts from real issues that may plague Scotland.

  13. As much as the current UK government isn’t great, I do not want Scottish Independence. The SNP are using it as a smokescreen for their own errors.

Independence should be about what they could do better than what they are doing right now, and right now they’re also crap.

  14. Serious question: How come they’re having a second referendum even though they had one a few years ago and the result was to stay? I know it was close, but don’t you have to go with whatever the vote with? If Scotland can have a referendum every few years for independence, then why can’t the UK vote every few years to rejoin the EU since so many people are unhappy with Brexit? Not trying to be a dick, genuinely asking.

  15. Don’t blame them. You have a lunatical fascist government down South with no opposition, and every opportunity to work with Ireland and the EU to build a better and more valuable relationship. And now the EU is willing to give Scotland a chance especially if it puts Westminster out.

  16. If I’ve learnt one thing in the last 6 years it’s that breaking away from a Union is fucking painful

  17. If Westminster refuses to give Scotland another independence referendum, then it would turn me against Unionism here in Wales. I support devolution, and will not stand by and allow it to be undermined. To refuse Scotland another referendum is anti-democratic.

  18. UK independence from EU = bad

Scottish independence from UK = good

What a joke. People supporting Scottish “independence” want to join the EU. That’s not really independence, is it?

  19. Really hope Westminster allows this to go ahead.

If they vote to leave, cool. That’s their choice!

If they vote to remain? Cool. Let’s shut up about wanting to leave all the time though.
