Germany: Stadler showed four cars of its new FLIRT Nordic Express EMU at InnoTrans in Berlin, built specifically for Norwegian state operator Norske tog. The model had not been exhibited anywhere before.
The aluminium-bodied train was designed around Norway’s climate, according to the Swiss manufacturer. It is rated for operation between -40 °C and +35 °C and comes fitted with snow ploughs, underfloor heating as part of the climate control system, reinforced thermal insulation and equipment shielding against snow and ice.
The train runs on a dual-system traction drive for AC lines at 15 kV and 25 kV, with a maximum speed of 200 km/h and acceleration of 0.6 m/s². Maximum power at the wheel rim is 6.4 MW, with a starting tractive effort of 330 kN.
Seating totals 464 across two classes, including 41 reclining seats that fold into a semi-recumbent position, plus 27 seats in the bistro area. The saloon also includes a family zone, a luggage compartment and a staff room.
Norske tog ordered 17 eight-car FLIRT Nordic Express trains in four variants under a March 2023 contract, awarded following a tender, with an option for a further 66 units. The firm order is worth more than NOK 8 bln (€710.3 mln). Deliveries are due to start in 2028, with the trains entering service on the Oslo–Bergen route.
