No charges against Tánaiste Leo Varadkar for leaking confidential GP contract

  1. Be interesting if the decision was based on lack of evidence of wrong-doing, or the little known prosecution was not in the public interest criteria.

I’m not in the legal field so can’t make any sort of assessment in that arena, but it is an absolute fucking disgrace that he has gotten away consequence free with something any normal public servant would at minimum be sacked for, and would seem likely to lead to some sort of charges too. Terrible precendent for democracy in this country. The Irish Trump.

  2. Why the fuck did it take so long to come to that decision that we all knew was going to happen.

  3. Are there minutes of the meeting on how this decision was reached, ie any transparency.
    It’s is ‘public’ prosecution service

  4. I can’t say if it was criminal, but it was definitely unethical. I emailed my local TDs when it broke, really expected him to be forced to resign.

I would be interested in the details of the file passed onto DPP.

  5. I’ll just grab the popcorn and read the comments as all the legal experts come out in force to give their expert opinion on reddit

  6. Dodgy event > complaint to Gardaí > Garda investigation > file sent to DPP > DPP decides not to prosecute. It’s often frustrating but it’s normal. I know a lot of people hate Varadkar and are therefore disappointed. But not every disappointing decision is a conspiracy. People accused of far, far worse things, who Gardaí believe have a case to answer get let off the hook by the DPP every day and most people aren’t even aware.

Anyway, this leak is nothing by comparison with his government’s abject failure to address the housing fiasco. It’s a low-importance sideshow.

  7. Remember lads we’re a great country and there’s no corruption here. Now get back to the salt mines.

  8. I just don’t understand how anyone can defend Leo Varadkar after the past 12 years. FF/FG they’ve let us down massively – again. I was 16 in 2008 and I’m 30 now in a few weeks. I’ve my tickets booked. Leaving the country for the second time I wish I never came back. I’m just incredibly dissapointed at the way our country year after year get mismanaged and bled dry by vultures, investment bankers and corrupt politicians hiding in plain

  9. Fine Gael is still in the toilet, poll wise. Regardless of the investigation’s outcome, the man’s reputation isn’t making a comeback anytime soon.

  10. But if you smoke 2 joints on a Sunday afternoon and get stopped for the swab Monday morning you get a year off the road for driving not under the influence.

  11. Leo supporters, when it happened: “Ain’t nothin’ gonna happen”

Leo detractors, when it happened: “Ain’t nothin’ gonna happen”

    Everyone, now: “Yep”
