The unification will make Romania to climb one position in Europe in land area as the country would be bigger than UK. Also the total population would be about 23 millions and the total GDP would be over 300 billions above of that of Finland according to IMF 2021 estimates. The bad side of this unification would be the decrease of the GDP per capita as Moldova is way poorer than Romania

Trivia which might not be known to everyone:
Romanians call Moldovans “our brothers from across Prut”. From Romania’s perspective, Moldova was cut in two, but it’s great they got their independence from Russia.
One of Romania’s historical regions is called Moldova and it borders Rep. Moldova. Another region you might have heard about is Transylvania.
Moldova, Transylvania, Oltenia, Dobrogea, and other smaller regions, are to Romanians Romanian, and in our heart and history Rep. Moldova belongs to one of them.
If Romania eats Moldova, we want North Macedonia (Formerly the Former Yougoslavic Republic of Macedonia) as compensation. 19th century great politics like.
But honestly, Moldova isn’t going anywhere with its Russian backed insurgency. It’s at civil war for 30 years now. If I was Romanian, I wouldn’t want to inherit that.
What would happen to Transnistria in this scenario? Could the rest of Moldova join Romania if they wanted to?
Then Gagauzia should be independent. It will be interesting see Christian Turkish state in Europe.
How possible?
A unification with Moldova would be bad for Romania. Many of my countrymen want it because of nationalism. We are one of the most nationalist countries in Europe. Yes, nationalism and not patriotism.
First of all, I do not see Moldova as a country that needs to be a part of Romania. East and West Germany is not an example. Rather Germany and Austria are. Romania became a modern state in 1859 and we declared our independence in 1877. Moldova was a part of the modern stat only between 1918-1940. Yes today’s Republic of Moldova was a part of the Principality of Moldova until 1812, but never a part of the modern state that emerged form the union of the Danubian Principalities.
Now for more current reasons. Romania is a mess: from a political and economics POV. Moldova is worse in both fields, plus they had an entire Russian army on their official territory. I mentioned East and West Germany’s unification. That is a case study where even one of the most powerful economies in the world did not managed to bring the new territory on the same level after 30 years. Keeping in mind that Romania has way fewer resources to spare. A union is equal to an economic crisis or a decades long stagnation. We may afford to stagnate if we were an economic powerhouse, not one of the poorest countries in Europe.
We also can not manage a union. Our politics and administration are one of the most inefficient in Europe. Moldova’s are at least worse. Corruption is rife in both areas. The new economic and administrative challenges would be too great for what we have.
The enlarged country will become a dictatorship. Romanian democracy is fragile and on a downwards slope. Moldova is ranked even lower. Do not bring Maia Sandu as an argument. She did not proved anything yet. And may never do. The “new” state will have a weak democracy that will be attacked by the Romanian Putin lover far-right AUR and and openly the pro-Russians in Moldova. A few years after the union, disappointment will kick in. In Romania because the standard of living will not change and in Moldova because it is believed that such a union will bring large economic benefits. A fragile democracy with unhappy people that will result in further democratic backsliding. A greater Romania is not ripe for democracy. We have the lessons of the interwar Greater Romania. Shame that no one is interested in.
Bottom line, besides the nationalist mumbo jumbo about “our brothers from across the Prut”, there is no valid reason for a unification.
That would just make them Romanians even poorer, imagine putting all your future money in the new region which is pro-Russia and under developed leaving the rest of the better developed with no future investment opportunity.
In the 90’ right after german reunification they used to say : If you are poor and have 4 naughty kids you’re not going to adopt a fifth.
Altough only autonomous prepare yourself for a Turkish state in EU
the Gagausians really do not want this to happen. As does Transnistria. Thats even a reason why transnistria broke off in the first place, because it didnt want to unite with romania.
Goldfish
Can someone from Moldova get Romanian citizenship easily?
Never gonna happend while Putin is around.
It will never happen. Look each big group has a separate country that could be unified but will not:
1. Germany- Austria
2. Netherlands- Belgium
3. Romania – Moldova
4. Serbia – Kosovo
5. Serbia – Bosnia
6. Albania – Kosovo
7. Bulgaria – Macedonia
8. Greece – Cyprus
9. Croazia – Bosnia
10. France – Belgium
It’s like a non spoken international agreement to keep the separate countries to not create irredentism
Edit: Romanians downvoting me lol
If that happens, us transylvanians should secede. On second thought, we don’t have any beef with the rest of the regions, just Bucharest. So new plan: Moldova joins, but we throw out Bucharest. Also Cluj is on probation just so they don’t get any ideas.
You’re using a wrong map, change Serbia borders.
Never going to happen, Russia gave Moldova more land than it had, so there are Russian civilians it will try to protect, same thing that happened in Ukraine.
How would it work? Will Transnistria and Gagauzia lose their autonomy? I think it’s not hard to guess that it will cause many problems. Or can they keep their autonomy? If yes, will the Székelys also get it?
Mol**do**va and **R**omania together look like **Dor**y…
Wouldn’t it be better for Moldova to join the EU directly?
While Moldova and Romania have a lot in common, recent historical developments have caused some divergence socially and economically.
If they both join the EU (and later the euro) they would have most advantages and fewer disadvantages.
One more Poland
Is someone able to summarise on facts what this issue is all about?
Maybe folks might wanna see a unification between Russia and Belarus (white Russia)?
It won’t happen.
Looking good, but I doubt it could mirror that shape exactly. Transnistria will likely not be there.
Wow, i really need a map like this to visualize it, thank you
What a weird abberation that bit of Ukraine looks now.
How does a possible unification of Romania and Moldova lead to Kazakhstan disappearance?
Stupid question: would they speak Romanian?
Difficult for people to accept to give up the power/control that they already have – on both sides.
Well, this way they would be immediately in the EU.

I’m not sure if this unification is good
