Wales basic income: Pilot will give care leavers £19,000 a year

  1. I wonder if that will create an incentive to remain in care until age 18 for some youngsters?

Not that this would necessarily be a problem.

  2. It’s a grant. And it sounds good to me, long overdue.

I do wish this ‘basic income’ thing would go away though. It requires massive tax changes (and massive tax increases). It’s never going to happen.

  3. If I understand the scheme correctly, they want to give £1600 per month for 24 months, to 18 year olds who have grown up in care and are now leaving care.

This sounds absolutely fantastic as an idea. These people do not have a safety net of family and it’s a rough adjustment to the adult world, regardless of your circumstances.

Living alone for the first time, maybe going out too many times in the first few months and realising that you have to take care of yourself when drunk/hungover. Being late on a bill and having to wait for next month’s payment. Getting registered with GP/dentist/electoral roll/council tax etc.

It’s all extremely valuable learning that can be done in relative financial safety.

These are some of the most vunerable people in society and they are going to make many MANY silly mistakes that might not happen if you have a parent you can just call to fix it for you.

Setting people up properly in life will pay itself back multiple times over. Not just the productivity side, it’s far cheaper to support someone at the start than to deal with the fallout when it fails.

  4. Pointless trial if only for a couple of years. If it was permanent for the testers we would get some real data. Instead they’ll save it up and not spend how they should because they know its going to end.

  5. Next years headline: “Welsh care leavers have highest rate of drug dependency and death in the U.K.”

What could go wrong with giving loads of free money to teenagers?
