They need to reform that whole system to make it fairer to the genuie asylum seekers and the Irish public.
Love Island finished up?
Makes sense. If you aren’t a genuine asylum seeker then it’s time to go home.
Good. The system needs to be efficient so those with genuine asylum claims can get the help they need.
The appeals system needs a massive overhaul
This is incredibly necessary considering the current state of the asylum system here. There are hundreds of single males arriving to Ireland from France and the UK (Algerian/Somali/Georgian origin) who are solely here to work and exploit the system which is at the point of collapse. A speeding up in the processing/denial at the border of these individuals needs to be done.
I say this as a lefty. The amount of resources being wasted on these cases is illogical.
Government will have to start building/purchasing homes for asylum seekers , as hotel rooms are not long term solutions. They committed to providing homes to refugees last year and this needs to be honored. 35 k Ukraine’s need houses also now.
Glad to hear it.
Our system needs to be cleared up significantly to get the best help and resources to legitimate asylum cases or refugees.
There is far too much being wasted on bullshit & unending appeals.
Great to see. This is needed as a deterrent.
Was this intended to be published in the Ireland version of the Irish Times or did it slip in by accident?
About time – the amount of failed “asylum seekers” still sitting in IPAS accomodation is crazy. No wonder they are renting out hotels all over the country there’s a 700% increase in applications this year.
Thank fuck we’re able to have a grown up conversation about this. In America, quite a lot of people think that anyone who’s opposed to fully open immigration must be a racist. That sounds like hyperbole and I wish it was, but I’ve seen it too many times.
Although to be fair, I do think that a large number of Americans are opposed to immigration for racist reasons, so I can see how it can be easy to conflate people like that with people who have genuine concerns about the downsides of unchecked immigration.
> In 2019, the last year deportations took place, there were more than 2,000 such orders issued, but just 298 were enforced. In 2018, there were 1,117 orders issued and 163 enforced.
This is depressing reading, what an utter soft touch approach that is taken to this issue.
What about the people pretending to be Ukrainian?
OP’s comments in this thread are pretty obvious trolling; he’s sticking up a load of posts that highlight problems with immigration, then adopting a fake-innocent “diversity is our strength” pro-migration line in the comments, trying to rile people up. (For what it’s worth I agree Ireland is mismanaging many aspects of migration, so I don’t really care about someone pushing an anti-asylum-scammer line.)
What’s interesting is _why_ he’s doing it! When trolls are just motivated to “own the libs”, they actually tend to write bigger, higher-effort comments because they do ultimately _care_ about the perceived pwnage. Instead, OP is repeating the same few talking points on a loop, like a customer service agent with a particular company line or something. “The government has promised 30k homes for refugees”, “The minister is bringing forward legislation”, etc.
Might OP be a _paid_ troll? Would anyone actually care enough to _pay someone_ to promote a particular political agenda on little old r/ireland ?
I had a look at OP’s post history, and there’s more that’s peculiar there. I’ve taught English and have a good eye for writing styles: I’m literally 100% confident from his writing that OP was not raised in Ireland, and is not a native English-speaker. If he has spent any time physically here it was less than a year, I’d guess.
So, okay, but why does he have a super-Irish personal name as his username? Since he writes “we” all the time talking about Ireland, maybe OP has moved here and identifies strongly with his adopted country?
But then, why would a recent immigrant exclusively post red-meat and bait stories about our housing/migration problems, with a particular emphasis on _the negative effects of Ukrainian refugees_, while kind of obscuring his own background/presenting at a native Irishman?
More directly stated: I think OP is a paid Russian troll, part of a campaign to disunify EU countries by poking at the weak, sensitive points in our respective societies. “Hey everyone, don’t Ukrainian refugees negatively effect [hot button issue]? Gee whiz, I wonder what the political effects of this would be? Perhaps we should raise [issue] with our weak, decadent Ireland politicians?”
I don’t think OP should be banned or whatever, but I think it’s important to recognise his agenda.
Good. If you come here illegally prepare to suffer the consequences!
Currently work in Justice. Very few deportation orders are followed through with. Maybe 1 in 10 or so. Garda have not got the man power to continually look for these people.
Seems like they are making room for the Ukranian people wanting to come here.

Fantastic news 👏👏👏👏
At least we don’t send anyone to Rwanda.
