Czechia: Overall, 58 percent of people say the current regime is better than the Communist one, vs 25 percent who say its worse.
In Slovakia, the number is almost equal with 40 percent saying the current regime is worse vs 45 percent saying its better.
I would summarize the different trends with how much worse people think they are and how thats changed but im too lazy so I will leave that to someone else if they want to.
Wasn’t Czechia the more atheist one and Slovakia the more christian one?
>far worse
yea, standing in queue to buy toilet paper was great. Now to get shortages we need global pandemic and iditols who buyout paper rolls.
Slovakia has had the misfortune to be plagued by populist, thieving, mafia-befriending, all the way up to irrational, non-fact-based governments with some exceptions (which later proved to be corrupt as well).
The Czechs are in a stronger position as a society because of the higher level of education, entrepreneurship, cultural heritage, individualism.
For all the failings, Capitalism was probably more useful to the Czechs who were capable of using it to their advantage, whereas us backward Slovak peasants whose culture was virtually hidden in sheep-rearing valleys for a thousand years and whose education mostly came from the outside remain mistrustful of authority, facts, rationalism/enlightenment and “progress”. To peasants these words usually mean benefit to the rulers. Except since about 1993 Slovaks are continuously failing to realize they can speak for themselves and rule themselves.
We are, indeed, the cockroaches of Europe, able to survive anything, but forever rooting in the dirt.
As to why plenty of people think fondly of Communism, it is probably down to (a) selective memory and (b) the fact that Communism lead you by the hand and spoon-fed you, which is something that peasants apparently like.
Disclaimer: I’m criticizing my own culture as a whole, while understanding there are exceptions and pockets of modernity even in my country.
