Breaking: Chancellor Nadhim Zahawi’s tax affairs under investigation by HMRC

  1. It was bloody obvious this was going to happen given how suspect some of his previous financial arrangements have been, and he must’ve been completely blinded by ego to run anyway

  2. HMRC should save themselves some time and just investigate every leadership candidate. The police may wish to do this for allegations of sexual misconduct or bribery too. We’re hardly dealing with the most moral people here and you can bet most have some skeletons in the wardrobe.

  3. We will be in a perpetual cycle of scandal and lame PM’s whilst we continually vote for self serving millionaires that have no idea what it is like for 99% of the population.

  4. According to the article this is a continuation of the investigation that the NCA conducted, reported by the Independent a [couple of days ago](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/politics/chancellor-nadhim-zahawi-nca-investigation-b2117197.html). The investigation is ongoing, so he’s being investigated by his own department.

And Johnson and Patel knew this at the time he was appointed to head it.

    > HMRC became involved after a secret inquiry was initially launched into Mr Zahawi’s finances by the National Crime Agency (NCA) in 2020. The Independent has also established that officers from the Serious Fraud Office (SFO) investigated the chancellor’s financial affairs.

    > The probe was then passed to HMRC, which falls under the control of the Treasury – the department that Mr Zahawi now runs. A senior Whitehall source confirmed that the tax investigation is currently “unresolved”.

    > It can also be revealed that Boris Johnson, home secretary Priti Patel and the Cabinet Office were all informed of the investigations.

Margaret Hodge [posted a letter to Zahawi](https://twitter.com/margarethodge/status/1545429563043418113) yesterday with some pointed questions about his affairs.

There have also been previous suggestive reports touching on Zahawi’s oil interests and tax strategy.

    Examples:

  5. Surely you’re not insinuating that a member of The Conservative Party would abuse the British tax system!? How dare you make such a ridiculous, barely reasonable accusation!

  6. So we have…

Zahawi: Tax affairs under investigation by HRMC

Sunak: non-dom tax dodger, lockdown lawbreaker, filthy rich and has no idea how normal people live

Tugendhat: wants to expel all russians from the UK, fighting a fascist state by becoming one

Baker: climate denier, anti-environment, general threat to life on the planet

    Truss: [cheese](https://youtu.be/y2V3PrfN98U)

    Braverman: [z-list nodding dog](https://youtu.be/xo5dnxw2PGc)

  7. When one reads *any* news about *any* political figure in the UK, one must always recall the maxim regarding the telling of a joke.

    It’s all about the timing.

  8. The moment the general public realise just how utterly corrupt this entire political party is cannot come soon enough. They’re not even trying to hide it anymore, it’s so fucking blatant.

  9. It’s all a joke. He wouldn’t get a job at the co-op if they knew he was getting investigated by HMRC; instead he’s running the countries finances.

  10. According to Iain Dale, Zahawi has wanted to be chancellor for ages and he’s been asking for the role repeatedly.

Now you know why. I give it 2 months before he passes new legislation that exonerates him.

  11. The fantastic part is that you just know that the candidates are all busy orchestrating smears on each other. Meanwhile reputation of the Tory party as a whole continues to be ground into the dirt. Marvellous.

  12. Adam Fleming said on the BBC newscast podcast a few days ago that some tories have had a dossier on Zahawi’s finances prepared for some time.

Looks like that rumour was true, I wonder how many dossiers there are floating around Westminster waiting to be used…

  13. “We put all our politicians in prison as soon as they’re elected. Don’t you?” “Why?” “It saves time.”
