When we do finally hit 40C over a widespread area in the U.K. (I don’t think it will happen for a good few years yet). We are going to see a number of heat related deaths as buildings aren’t designed for cooling.
In 2012. The UK’s climate change committee recommended 64 key climate adaption recommendations for the U.K. to take. As of the latest Risk Assessment last year, the U.K. government had adopted *none of them*.
A lot of people are going to have to die before we really start to take action on climate adaption sadly.
Fuck if it hits 40 I’m pulling a sickie. No chance I’m spending all day in the sun in PPE. I’ll end up losing all the wrinkles from my balls as the sweat will steam them out !
This is a very non-story. It’s already been pointed out in the comments that this is just a singular prediction out of a group of different ones.
Even in the article:
> “All the factors have to align perfectly for the UK to attain 40C,” said Ms McCabe.
> “While it is possible, it’s extremely unlikely, even if the risk is the highest it’s ever been.
> “For example, for the weekend of 16/17 July 2022, most forecasts are in the low-to-mid 30s, and there are just as many forecasts showing maxima not much above 20C as there are showing 40C.”
I don’t doubt it will happen at some point in the future + that climate change is certainly going to accelerate it, but it’s not going to be the entire country basking in 40’c.
I remember it hitting 37 C in London in 2015, so I don’t see why this is unlikely
Computer does not know that I’m going camping in July. In Snowdonia. It won’t be 40 degrees (well, perhaps in Fahrenheit)
Edit: I’ve just lit a barbecue and no clouds have appeared. Possibly a sign of the apocalypse..
Can it please fucking not. It’s already trying to push 30 and I’m hating every second of it.
Please God no, I’m 7 months pregnant and can’t cope 😭
Well the highest recorded temperature so far is 38C in Cambridge so it wouldn’t really surprise me if we hit 40 soon.
Wow all those sewage filled rivers are going to smell awful fermenting in that kind of heat :<
Best bit, we had models and predictions this would happen over 50 years ago. Carry on though don’t let me stop you
The bad news is its only gonna get hotter over the next number of years.
Climate change will kill us all and there’s not a lot we can do to stop it now.
To be fair, the weather in scotland has been pretty eh, atleast in my neck of the woods. Hasn’t hit above 19C and its cloudly!
Remember when summer meant 15C? Maybe pushing 20C during a heat wave?
Edit: for everyone calling me out, looked up the weather data. August 1991, average temperature was 17.1C. Where I grew up, it hit 14C, which was the highest since 1984. Average temperatures across the UK have hit 20’s and 30’s before, but the key word there is *average*
I’ve been waking up in pools of sweat the past few summers as it is, this is overkill.
> The prediction has been met with a “mix of shock and surprise” by forecasters, who say it is actually very unlikely to happen – at least this summer.
> From one source
The article itself contradicts it’s own headline.
Well if it is any consolation, if future predictions are correct and the North Atlantic Current slows considerably, then the UK (and most of northern Europe) will experience winters as cold as Canada. -30 isn’t all that bad…so long as it’s a dry cold like in Alberta
I used to live in a very hot country. Tips:
Open all windows you can when it’s shady/night time (but don’t leave ground floor ones open if it’s not safe obvs). Close and cover any window that gets sun in the day time. If you can put makeshift shutters on the outside even better. Once the air outside is warmer than inside you want those things closed. Keep curtains (blackout if you can) closed to avoid sunlight warming the room.
Wet a flannel and put it on the back of your neck. You can do this and still go about your daily activities. Sleep under a damp flat sheet. Using any wet fabric is useful for cooling especially with sleep. You can put a wet washcloth on your chest or back to help stay cool. Avoid using appliances that generate a lot of heat if you can. Might be a good week to avoid PC gaming and read instead.
If you have to travel/commute – use the wet flannel method on your neck or under your shirt. Try carrying a spray bottle to refresh with water. Get an insulated lunch bag and put flasks of iced water inside. They will stay cool for longer. Never leave the house without some water. Drink electrolytes/get plenty of salt to help replace sweat.
Good old panic headline. Because when you actually read the story, forecasters say it is very unlikely to happen.
Having said the above, I do think it will only be a few years before this sort of temp is reached. Then we will start to certain crops start to fail because of the heat.
I’ve got a portable air con unit on my wish list and have done for the past few years. This might be the year that finally gets me to bite the bullet and invest
The French will hate it when we end up with the best conditions to make wine.
Time to get trees planted everywhere to at least provide lots of shade for people
Most wild British animals aren’t adapted to deal with these kinds of temperatures. It’s easy to focus on how humans are going to manage, but we’re not the vulnerable ones. If we start getting weeks long heatwaves at 40 degrees or higher, our ecosystem is going to collapse.
