Schwerin Castle, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, Germany

  1. Schwerin is a really nice place, it feels so quiet and calm to be surrounded by water. If you’ve never been there, it’s a great place for a weekend visit, the inner city can be visited in a day or two and you can enjoy the nice parks.

(of course, not in the middle of the current pandemic wave…)

  2. (Swede here) I visited Schwerin as a young kid kid with my family in the early spring of 1990, before the formal reunification happened in November. Our hosts were a western german (GDR) family we had randomly gotten to know after they bought a summer house close to where we lived.

My main memories of this adventure:

    a) That castle.

    b) Everything was weirdly cheap.

    c) Going from shop to shop sometimes buying the random odd stuff that was interesting/available. I scored some model railroad stuff (Märklin H0 “copies”). My dad bought a really solid portable gas stove that I still have around .. great during power outages.

  3. currently riding my bike through that part every day, sometimes you really forget how beautiful it is when youve been living there the entire time
