Finnish Lapland

  1. Ounasjoki from “kuninkaanlaavu” -lean to. There used to be at least two up there. But they burn down every once in a while, teenager are often blamed for vandalism but nice fireplaces (sausages, coffee) and epic views allways attract more inexperienced tourists.

River Ounasjoki used to be one of the larges Salmon rivers in the whole lapland. but after the wars, Finland needed power to pay back war debts and buils an indusrty on a buened land. So they build damns on Kemiriver, which actually unites with Ounasjoki only couple of kilometers down from to the left.

So, no more salmon and the whole fishing industry, but also way of life diminished. Finland has few salmon rivers left. Both, the fish and the salmon fishing culture is kept alive by regulations.

It is possible to build ways for the salmon to rise all the way to Ounasjoki. If you build a route for them, you loose some of the water, and energy. Electric companies refuse to build these salmon roads, they don’t wan to loose any money. And are being real dicks about it. Very little is done and what is done is mostly just cosmetic.

Also, because of the damns blocking the water. The natural flow of the water is disturbed. This, and the fact that the forest industry has drained most of the swamps, down in these all ready endangered rivers. The mud “humus” blocks the riverbeds. Many of the natural fishes lay their eggs in the fine sand. Not even the fine sand, different kind of fish need different kind of grain size of the sand. To be able to reproduce. The mud is blocking more and more of the river all the time. In some places the thickness of the humus is counted in meters.

Yep and most of the lakes too. The whole environment and the biodiversity is endangered and something should be done before it’s too late. There are ways to block the draining ditches and restore the natural flow of water. The swamp environment is also endangered because of draining.

Most of the forest you see here have been cut and regrown. You can see the patches. Most of the biodiverse and rich environment is gone. The old forests in the top of the hills and by the rivers are rare and they are home to the pollinators without which we would not have berries. Also the rare birdspecies live in these environments. Swamps have shitton of species from both flora and fauna, these swamps should be preserved.

The natural fish is gone, so they grow some american-brought rainbow trout and release it to te river, to be catched. Rainbow trout cannot reproduce in this natural environment. It just messes around with the balance of natural fish. But it’s tasty. They also grow pikeperch and release in to the wild. It’s also tasty.

But i just wanted you to know this. Really good picture!
