I actually saw one of those yesterday and was really very surprised, alas it was dying and the ants come and ripped it apart. I am fairly certain I used to see them as a child as well quite often, it wasn’t the first time I have seen them and this article suggests they were extinct at the time. Curious.
It’s a great news indeed, but feel a bit torn if it was because of the climate change.
Wow I remember them in the early 70’s, they were pretty common and one of the larger butterflies around. Haven’t seen one since the elms went, cool they are coming back.
Science. 🤣😂🤣😶
ship it to Rwanda
To be fair I’ve seen a wide range of new butterflies in my garden.
Jet black with blood red spots (quite big) is one of them.
Saw one in Bedford a couple of days ago.
Is the a large Tortoiseshell different to the Tortoiseshell? because I see Tortoise shell, Peacock, Cabbage White butterflies in my garden every year.
edit- I’m probably seeing the small Tortoiseshell
They heard Boris was going so slipped out to party.

The success of Knepp has been staggering, a beacon of hope in our [nature depleted isle](https://news.sky.com/story/biodiversity-uk-is-one-of-worlds-most-nature-depleted-countries-new-data-finds-12430477). It has new successes every year it seems with populations of rare species returning and growing. Puts our national parks to shame, which are nothing more than overgrazed farmland.
I love that for him.
There’s my Saturday afternoon oxymoron.
The Jesus christ of butterflies.
I just saw one near Cambridge, was shocked.
