Pigeon flies from England to Alabama: Shelter ignores PETA plea not to give it back to owner

  1. While PETA are clearly idiots, pigeon racing also sucks.

This pigeon probably won’t be culled because of the crazy story, but owners typically cull pigeons that return slowly in races.

I’ve read accounts of owners turning up to claim a bird after someone contacted them via the leg band, and simply twisting the bird’s neck and tossing it in a bin—in full view of the person returning it.

  2. Good for the shelter, PETA has an awful track record of killing animals it takes in.

They also enjoy stealing and killing peoples pets too apprently.

  3. I’d like to politely point out that PETA kill so many animals as they take in all the animals no kill shelters deem lost causes and thus won’t take in so they can keep their no kill records.

It’s not out of malice, it’s the animals very last hope and they, unfortunately, rarely survive.

That’s why their death rate is so high.

  4. The man loved the pigeon and the pigeon has clearly bonded with the man. Pigeon racing might not be great but it would be wrong to separate the two from one another. I’m a staunch vegan myself but even I can see that not returning the pigeon is a poor idea here.

  5. Just another friendly reminder that while PETA aren’t exceptional, a lot of the common complaints people have are usually unfounded.

Ask yourself why they even need to exist in the first place.

And as for anyone concerned about the owner culling the pigeon, it sounds less distressing than what happens to livestock in our country. Check out [Land of Hope and Glory](https://youtu.be/dvtVkNofcq8), all UK farm footage, all standard practice.

  6. Just literally let the pigeon go, they survive fine and will find a flock. The reason they where found in the first place is because they didn’t want to go home, or couldn’t make it and needed a rest. Pigeon racers are selfish, tell me how they are not. Nobody is right in this discussion. Nobody here cares about the pigeon truthfully. Before you start with some bs about how they are treated well, how would you like it if we just drop you off in the middle of the ocean in a padel boat and negleced if you don’t get back in a certain time, or stopped from having relationships because of it. Just a bunch of clowns trying to score internet points about their views on PETA and how so above their supposid morality they are

  7. > amid allegations from the group that the pigeon’s owner “cruelly subjected him” to a pigeon race.

You mean watching him fly from A to B using his built-in homing instincts?

    Christ almighty.
