Ireland could ‘adopt’ areas of Ukraine for reconstruction after the war, Simon Coveney says

  1. >Ireland may “adopt” a region of Ukraine to aid in its reconstruction when the Russian invasion ends, Minister for Foreign Affairs Simon Coveney has said.

    >The support Ukraine will require to rebuild after the war could be similar in ambition to the Marshall Plan, the United States’ post second World War reconstruction of Europe, and Ireland will support this, the Minister told the Oireachtas Committee on European Union Affairs.

    >Ukraine will require a combination of loans and grant aid and there has been discussions between leaders on how this could work, he said.

    >One proposal is for countries to “adopt certain oblasts or certain regions in Ukraine,” Mr Coveney said. “Ireland has been linked to certain cities in that context that have been severely damaged in some cases. There’s a lot to discuss there.”

  2. It would be good for the construction industry in terms of architects, engineers etc. Especially with a lot of the work now done virtually with building models etc.

  3. We don’t even have an acceptable road between Cork/Limerick or Limerick/Waterford and this is the shite this traitorous scumbag comes out with !!

  4. Maybe adopt a part of Ireland first. Seriously these FFG types need to be dumped at the next election.

  5. Hmmm seems that FFFG and their property developer crony friends are eyeing up big $$$ for rebuilding Ukraine!

“Can i interest you in some REITs, extortionate cost rental or even better scandalous 25 year leasing agreements Mr Zelensksy?”

  6. Yes I saw map that had us assigned to the Rivne oblast in eastern Ukraine along Belarus border , it has a population around the same as Dublin

  7. First we need to build 500,000 additional housing units in Ireland. Our country has a terrible housing crisis. Once we get all that done, then we can talk about building stuff in Ukraine.

  8. In fairness, if we started training apprentices now in block laying, plumbing, concreting and carpentry to get 50,000 to 60,000 houses extra built a year then they would have another 10 years work in the Ukraine.

Unfortunately that makes too much sense and the planning is too slow for that to ever happen.

  9. Ireland could adopt areas of north dublin for reconstruction first..

That place has been a war zone for waaaaaay longer…

  10. Our region will be amongst the last to be rebuilt and be the lowest due to pathetic aversion to building up. And there’ll be sprawl, so much sprawl

  11. I doubt they want some Irish lad saying

Sorry houses can’t be built overnight quit asking when we start building, the free market will fix it

  12. Fuck sake lads; offer to help rebuild even a bit of Ukraine and everyone is bitching as if it’s a choice between building houses here or building houses over there. It isn’t you morons.

We can do both – hold on to your tiny hats – at the same time. Money is not the problem here, labour, planning restrictions, and materials are. Money *is* a problem for Ukraine. We can give them money to help rebuild; relatively speaking, we’re fucking loaded.

Also, the proposal to adopt parts of Ukraine for rebuilding efforts is part of an international *collective* response and believe it or not, and this might be a concept beyond your ken, but the international community at large doesn’t really give a shit about Irish house prices. If a collective response is decided upon, then Ireland will meet her obligations as a responsible member of that international community.

Further, in any response to a nation being denied their sovereignty and being vicously attacked and abused by an overwhelming and ignorant power, Ireland should recall her own birthright and be among the first in line to offer aid. You don’t get to sit on your arse and bash the Brits while also sitting this one out. Time to put your money where your mouth is.

Lastly – and inb4 but but but but but – the right thing to do is the right thing to do and the thing we ought to do, whether it is *convenient* for us to be doing it or not. Ukrainians trying to piece their country back together and lads here going on about traitors and the Cork/Limerick road. Embarrasing.
