Front-runner Ben Wallace rules himself out of leadership run to succeed Boris Johnson

  1. Now that’s very interesting. He didn’t really strike me as someone who would be willing to be ruthless enough to win though. If he endorses Sunak now I’m sure he’d win, but if he endorses someone like Mordaunt or Tugendhat, things become very interesting.

  2. A Tory with integrity. He’d have been a front runner but knows continuity (and competence) in what’s currently a v important brief is more important than a shot at personal glory

  3. Yes but the last thing we need is another pathallogically career-driven entitled man (and obscenely rich) at the top. Can we make Ben PM against his wishes?

  4. I thought he was a front runner

It really is so uninspiring if the next PM is is chosen between Rishi, Liz Truss and this bloke who was chancelor for 24 hours

  5. There seem to be multiple headlines claiming that various candidates are the “clear favorite.” One was seen claiming to be Penny M., file under spin.

  6. Smart choice if he’s thinking long term. Think about it, whoever replaces Johnson will not only inherit a shitty economic/political situation, but also have to deal with a hostile former PM in the backbenches with a gaggle of his loyalists. Boris will be looking to whitewash his years in office, shift the blame for everything onto his successor, talk about how he was stabbed in the back and eventually try to take over the party again on the basis that he was the one who delivered the big 2019 win and Brexit. Anyone wishes to have successfully premiership would wait 5 years for a more favourable climate.

  7. Ben Wallace actually sounded like a decent pick of the bunch

Kind of humbling he’d rather focus on his current role than be a typical opportunist snake like the rest of them

Or he’s just playing a big brain move and not wanting to pick up the poison Boris chalice and have a fresh start as PM in future?

  8. Good, I didn’t think Wallace would have what it would take, but on seeing how he voted against same sex marriage, and other equality legislation, id rather he wasn’t representing the country

  9. Is a shame, he’s just what we needed, someone who was in the military and has propped up a corrupt Tory government for three years…

  10. Sensible move. The tories lose the next general election under whichever twat they choose. The inevitable infighting will result in the position being vacant, then he will be able to step up and become a leader with broader appeal.

    I hate it.

  11. It seems like everyone’s having a go.

I would like to announce that I will be running for Prime Minister. I will ensure that Reddit stays at the top of my agenda.

  12. I get the overwhelming feeling not a single Tory candidate knows about or cares in any way about the British people their all just souless career bureaucrats.
