Simon Coveney hopes to bring plans to Government in Autumn to allow Ireland join Nato affiliated Centre for Hybrid Threats in Helsinki. Not a “plot” to join Nato, he says, but it’s important to keep up to international standards.

  1. Personally, I don’t think it’s a good idea, but I’d bet my bottom dollar that Ireland *will* join NATO, someday, and it will be a Fine Gael Taoiseach who signs the agreement

  2. Whatever about conventional warfare you really can’t hope to stand alone when it comes to cyber and hybrid threats. Our lovely geographic distance doesn’t save us there, we are absolutely a target. Cyber actors are opportunistic in any case, but even beyond that the private sector organisations of hostile states are seen as fair game.

  3. He is a joke. This government is a joke. All that money that’s being spent on weapons could make life easier for millions of people. There better be a referendum about this.

  4. I hope this will mean a significant increase in defence spending.

We need to increase our spending and capabilities, along with military numbers.

  5. I mean Ireland has been a member of the NATO Partnership for Peace since the 1990’s, this seems much closer to a continuation of that than full blown membership.

  6. The same people who will have a moral panic about this are the same ones who think 5G is some kind of techno-voodoo. This is a legitimate concern we must adapt to be able to face up to unless we want more incidents like the HSE hack to happen.

  7. Our main risk during the coming period of climate change is invasion. How exactly do we propose to counter that without some kind of military alliance?
