I’ll be honest, I ride a road bike (to and from work) and those lapdogs often have bad leiband-ettiquette. They are small so people just let them wander. Bigger dogs often get a firmer hold and are better mannered in general. I slow the fuck down and have avoided running over such tiny dogs a few times only because of that.
Why would you intentionally hit a dog with your bike? Especially with your front wheel. Surefire way to get wiped-out. Seems like both parties could be in the wrong here. The cyclist for not slowing down and the dog owner for not looking where her dog was.
edit: looked up said road and it does invite for high speed cycling (long and straight). But if her dog was hit perpendicular that means it was going all over the place in my mind. She said she saw the cyclist coming, so why didn’t she move her dog to the side? I suppose it just darted around and she couldn’t control it.

But can we also talk about dogowners not knowing how to properly walk a dog? I always keep the dog (or child) on the outerside of the lane and away from the inside, that way you protect it and yourself against sudden movements and running on the car lane/toward it. But plenty of people just keep their dogs on the inside, which is more dangerous and gives you less time to react.
That’s a hit and run as far as I’m concerned. I hope they find the bastard and get the cops involved.
Mijn honden zijn al meerdere keren bijna langs achteren geraakt door fietsers. Als er toch alleen een apparaat bestond dat fietsers aan hun fiets konden vastmaken om mensen op voorhand van hun aanwezigheid te verwittigen… 🙄

I think it’s funny to see how people are looking for who made a mistake. I think it’s clear both made a mistake here. The cyclist should have definitely stopped and helped after it happened. The woman who was walking the dog should have either trained the dog better or have kept it safe. I have been in love with dogs and i ride my bike to compete in races just below the pro level so i am really divided on this one here.
I think it’s strange the dog could even get close to the wheel of the cyclist. As a dog owner you should be aware of your dog at all times on public places and roads, am i wrong?
Also, what is a high speed? Some people feel like 30km/h is a high speed while for trained cyclists it is a speed they can maintain for over 5 hours of riding. This doesn’t seem fast at all for them.
So the point is, i think hikers/dog owners and cyclists should have more responsibility when something actually happens and don’t point fingers to others. Watch yourself first before you complain about others.

Seriously everytime. When i walk my dog i am extremely aware of my surrounding and always very careful. Some people are nice enough to ring their bell in time.
But the cyclists taking themselves and their beer bellies way too seriously will just race by as close to you and your dogs they can on purpose. Luckily my dog is big amd would make them trip before being killed.
I seriously hate these people and the first one to hit my dog will get the beating of a lifetime.

They already refuse to slow down to pass the pedestrian safely so we have gotten used to see cyclists blasting by you but dogs do not like that and they do not realize that the cyclist may feel too entilted to stop to not make a accident with the pet.
There was an extreme increase of cyclists recently and as someone who walks his dog in the Sonian forest: I am **NOT** enjoying that.
I’m outright avoiding certain areas due to the abusive amount of cyclists that will to refuse to slow down or to simply respect the pedestrian only paths.

Tbh I almost had a similar incident recently. I was cycling on a mixed bike/pedestrian path when there was a woman walking on the right of the path. Only 10m from them, I noticed a small dog on a leash all the way to the left of the path. I A few meters later and the dog could have gotten stuck in my wheels as well, and Id have refused to take any responsibility there biking plenty slow and respecting all the other users of the path.
That said, I want to emphasize that actually hitting a dog and not giving a shit is definitely a hit and run to me

Ik wandel hier vaak op wat vroeger een spoorweg was, een mooi recht stuk door ons dorp voor voetgangers en fietsers. Maar sinds de e-steps en e-bikes er zijn krijg je steeds meer conflictsituaties. Wandelaars houden zowel links als rechts of blijven naast elkaar wandelen. Steps en fietsers passeren soms op een haar naast je, soms met 2 naast elkaar of in groep. En je mag daar eigenlijk maar 30, want het ligt in de zone 30, dus die hele snelle fietsen gaan daar soms veel te hard op.
Ik weet dat extra signaliatie in theorie niet nodig is, je hoort de regels te kennen. Maar voor kinderen of mensen die nooit met een auto hebben leren rijden, en mogelijks geen verkeersles op school hebben gehad, denk ik dat het toch nuttig zou zijn om een wandelrichting en herhaling van de snelheid er op te zetten. Misschien zelfs zo een bordje dat het hoffelijk is om plaats te maken en te denken aan de zwakste in een situatie.
Spijtig genoeg weinig gehoor naar hier, er word verwezen naar de verkeerslessen op school en dat overdreven snelheid gemeld moet worden. Jammer, want er zijn al vaker kinderen en volwassenen aangereden, tot met breuken toe, en ook daar is er iedere keer vluchtmisdrijf. Misschien hoor je het niet iedere keer als iemand wel stopt, maar dat zijn dan dus nog meer aanrijdingen…

Had eens meegemaakt dat een wielrenner een frontale botsing maakte met een fietser voor mijn ogen langs het kanaal. De fietser was buiten bewustzijn met veel schade aan zijn hoofd. Toen we stopten om hem te helpen was de wielrenner al doorgefietst. Gelukkig heeft een bijstaander hem ingehaald met de auto en gestopt

As a foreigner, I dislike many things about Belgium, but this is the one that takes the cherry.
I can’t for the life of me, figure out how a country so advanced in so many things can be so backwards when it comes to something so basic as urbanism and protecting the weaker users.
I also have to walk often along a fietspad and I’m always scared because some cyclists don’t give a shit, even when I’m walking with my child. We can have three lanes for cars in an urban area, parking spots, but gods forbid we build a proper sidewalk for pedestrians…
