Louth court gives man who was caught with cannabis a ‘really big chance’

  1. I wonder what he was doing when “causing a disturbance”? I often see posters who are pro-legalisation talk about the amount of time and money being wasted taking these things to court, and it is a fair point, but this fella wasn’t targeted because he was carrying some weed. He was doing something that warranted a police response so possibly would have ended up in court on a different charge.

This seems to happen a lot.

  2. “she added that if he needed that amount then there was an issue that needed to be adressed”

Aka , small bits are grand but don’t be taking the piss . Interestingly enough this man was earning around 500 quid a week so she wanted him to pay a 2 grand fine. Is this judge on drugs as well or??? I can guarantee after bills, food , rent , fuel etc there’s pennys left of that 500 , and this silly cunt want him to use it for a 2 grand fine. Sounds to me like the judge needs a refresher course ffs

  3. Gardai valuations of cannabis are wildly misleading as to the scale of the apparent crime. €700 worth of illegal cannabis in Ireland (Gardai street prices) is less than a months supply for medicinal users in countries with legal medicinal weed, as a comparison. €700 implies he had around 35g of cannabis herb. 50g-60g is a typical minimum monthly supply in many countries with legal medicinal cannabis. In addition, in places with legal recreational cannabis (using Denver or Colorado as an example), 35g could be as low as €100 depending on quality. And giving a higher fine based on someone being employed is just wrong, punishing people who try to contribute to society VS letting those less inclined to do so away with much smaller fines.

When Germany fully legalises recreational cannabis in the next year or two that will likely cause a tidal shift in thinking across Europe at a political level, and I believe judgments like this will be looked back on with ridicule in years to come.

It’s a shame really, ruining peoples lives who are doing no harm to anyone else just for consuming a plant that while potentially has some side effects on the individual, has been scientifically shown to have a vast amount of medicinal benefits. Prohibition is also a key driver of numerous negative impacts of cannabis, including lack of quality control (we’re living in the Poitin era for cannabis…) and funding criminal gangs to name just a couple. As opposed to alcohol which we nearly celebrate poisoning ourselves with in this country.

How many of you know an alcoholic who’s life expectancy will be cut short from alcohol abuse? I know too many, it’s very sad. Can’t say the same for cannabis
