Why are we still acting shocked that senior ministers have PM ambitions? Nobody becomes Chancellor, Home Secretary or Foreign Secretary without plans to eventually run for PM.
At least it shows a capacity to plan ahead. Honestly, the ability to scheme and plot could be an asset. Though I’m not sure if I want a complete lame duck Tory PM (less harm done that way, maybe) or someone competent enough to actually get something done.
I am surprised he only registered it in december, I woupd have bought a domain for a leadership campaign the day I joined the party.

If you’re only getting a cabinet position because Johnson is hiring you then you’re only chance to get the top job is by replacing him, anyone else will be insurmountable.
The timing is interesting. December 2021 is just after the Partygate scandal was beginning to break so Sunak probably thought Johnson was finished then. I wonder if the leaks about him to the papers coincided with someone in Johnson’s team realising that Sunak was planning a leadership bid. This has probably been in the works for a while.
