Johnson will leave scorched earth. The idea that he should stay until autumn is madness

  1. If he stays till Autumn and makes no major policy decisions (as he says he will) then a lot of the country’s major problems are going to get much worse. Major policy decisions are needed now to deal with the cost of living crisis etc.

  2. The very idea of him staying on is utterly preposterous.

He needs to go, and he needs to go now. The most powerful position in the entire country simply cannot be occupied by a man with no motive to do the right thing and who is just there to go through the motions.

It’s as dangerous as it is ludicrous.

  3. I hope Labour call for a vote of no confidence. It will likely be defeated since it requires the Conservatives to essentially vote for a general election. However it forces them to vote on public record to support Johnson’s government, even now.

  4. Maybe I’m a cynic but, is it beyond belief to suspect him of using the time to negotiate some means of staying on as PM after autumn? His entire record is one of lying and deceit. He needs to go today.

  5. Problem is now he is going to be desperate for money and a job, so he will be easily influenced in any direction the £££ is coming from

  6. From a party point of view…. can they afford to back down and allow him to stsy after what he did.

If he resigned the day Gove went to him then there would be no issue but the fact they had to publicly force him out makes me think it’s too far gone gor the party to support him.

  7. I’m concerned that he hasn’t *actually* resigned.

He said he will, but we already know he is a habitual liar. As far as I know he hasn’t spoken to the queen or handed in any form of notice of resignation, (I don’t know if the latter is required) so as far as I understand it, its just a promise, from a liar, that he will step down in a few months…

  8. I’m half wondering if he’ll end up putting himself forward for the leadership contest, banking on grassroots support to stymie the competition.

  9. Considering that he already admitted to meeting with a Russian agent without his security detail screams that this is a terrible idea.

  10. Yes, yes. Johnson, not the whole tory party. Just remove the one bad apple at the top, I am sure the other apples in the barrel aren’t also rotten, famously only one apple goes rotten at a time.

  11. There seems to be a ‘he’s learned his lesson’ vibe in Westminster, similar to Trump’s final days. Like Trump, Boris will without doubt conspire to line his pockets and take advantage of this hiatus. (He also wants to exploit chequers for a few big parties with his shady pals.) He will likely attempt to massage opinion in his favour with a last ditch PR push. His interim cabinet will certainly attempt to push through legislation that is harmful to the UK population and UK interests.

  12. I was saying this exact thing yesterday and people looked at me as if he has only been acting like a consummate professional up until now.
He is only staying to fill his pockets, shred his documents and work out a profitable escape plan.
I’m still convinced he will delay leaving number 10 under the guise that its best for the country.

  13. I am still repeatedly reminded that it was Corbyn who was so self-serving that he’d take the country down just to get his way. Because taxes and ‘austerity’ are only for the poor.

  14. Is he now the most least popular Prime Minister in History?

    Was there a worse one?

  15. Good read and compelling argument for speeding everything up. Here in Uxbridge, we just want him GONE!

  16. He won’t leave at all imo. He has 3 months to change either the public’s or Tory MPs minds.

That ‘resignation’ speech read more like the kick off for a campaign trail.

  17. Slightly torn on this one, because for sure we do not want a rushed ushering in of yet another sub-par PM a la Theresa May. I’d be happy to be patient if it facilitated a better decision personally

  18. *Scorched earth for the Tories.

Theres people saying he is attempting to be “The Last Tory PM” which definitely suits his ego. But if that is truly the case I wish him the best on that endeavour.

  19. Let him stay as long as he can , Absolutely run the party into the ground,
Otherwise what you are all forgetting is that he will be replaced and the British general public are that thick that they will forget about Boris and vote Tory again for another 4 years of fucking misery

  20. Hopefully he wants to be remembered well and goes out on a high note exposing all the corruption out of resentment to the party on a hope of being remembered favourably by the people. A vindictive redemption. Like that’s gonna happen.

  21. He’s literally admitted on video to liaising with a former KGB officer and giving him a knighthood. Why that isn’t being discussed more widely is baffling.

  22. Bold of them to assume he will move aside in the autumn.

He waffled on and said he wasn’t going to be the party leader but that’s it, he doesn’t want to move anywhere voluntarily.

The autumn is him playing his own party with the idea of just eking out Theresa May time period, come the autumn he will have figured out a new waffling excuse to try and eke out more time.

I’d like to say his party will see through it but they have blindly let him do what he likes at every opportunity so far.

  23. Is there any chance that he will not step down as PM by autumn? I mean he lied before, so it won’t be difficult for him to lie again.

  24. As Jess Phillips said on Twitter, he’s so untrustworthy that many members of the public don’t believe he’s actually resigned. She’s not wrong – he’s not resigned, he’s just promised to resign when a new leader is found in 3-4 months…

He needs to go now. He’s a dying animal and he’s got nothing to lose, if you thought the last 48 hours have been chaotic – wait for the next 3 months.

  25. Yep, agree.

Johnson staying as PM is totally unsustainable. He needs to step down, let deputy PM Raab take over, and get out of the way while a new Tory leader is elected ASAP.

The World cannot be but on hold until Autumn. There will continue to be important decisions that need to be made, judgements called, events reacted to. These will require bills to be passed and policies to be made up. How is that supposed to happen under a PM whom is not trusted even by his own MPs? It can’t.

  26. Anyone fancy a protest in front of Downing Street demanding that he call a general election and vacate the position immediately?
