Hi folks,

We are moving from Australia to Norway next month and are looking for places to rent in Tromso.

My wife has set up a profile on hybel.noexplaining who we are etc so that we can start applying, and she has been approached already by someone offering a place.

I’m a little worried about sending money overseas, so I’m wondering if there are any common scams running on [hybel.no](https://hybel.no) (especially around collecting deposits)? I couldn’t find anything in particular through some searching on Google, so I thought I would ask here.

Is there anything that I should watch out for?

Also, is it worth using the 14% deposit guarantee if it is available to foreigners?

Thanks for any insight

  1. Not sure about the amount of scams, but the website (and finn.no) are legit. But, is it an idea to pay deposit with credit card?

A proper rental deposit in Norway is supposed to be refunded after the contract expires. To facilitate this, banks have a special account for that purpose.

  2. You should not pay deposit to anyone in Norway. The deposit should be put in a (locked) bank account in your name.

Deposit guarantee can be a alternative, at least until your have a social security number and can open a bank account.
