Cargo bike sales soar as UK petrol prices surge | The Guardian

  1. I’m not entirely happy that making the alternative too expensive is how we’re encouraging the uptake of cycling, but I’m also not too unhappy about the result.

  2. It would be good to know how many cargo bike (and normal bike) purchasers are actually getting rid of their cars. Is this just a fad which will last until the cold weather comes back, or are we actually seeing permanent demand destruction for petrol?

  3. They’ve been an established thing for a while in Cambridge and it’s environs, which has ok cycle infrastructure and is flat. Electric ones are even better if you have hills. Drawbacks probably are that they’re pretty bulky so storage is potentially an issue and they might not fit in normal cycle stands and it makes using them in areas without cycle lanes a bit harder maybe? But on the whole they’re great, although the reason for this increase, not so much…

  4. I haven’t seen anyone where I live with a cargo bike, everyone is still using their cars even for a five minute journey to the shops.
