Bob Dylan had a few surprises up his sleeve for opening night of his Lights of Autumn Tour at the Oslo Spektrum in Oslo, Norway, on Saturday, including a new guitarist, fresh covers, and the first “Tangled Up in Blue” since 2018.

When the 85-year-old folk music legend took the stage, fans quickly noticed a new addition to his band. After enlisting Joel Paterson to replace his longtime band member Bob Britt in June and welcoming Julian Lage and Jad Tariq during his summer tour, Dylan introduced a fourth new guitarist—or rather, failed to introduce him. Fans were left to speculate, with many identifying the newcomer as Mike Seal, who has played with everyone from Jerry Douglas and Sierra Hull to Larkin Poe and Jeff Coffin. The new guitarist joined Dylan and Paterson alongside bassist Tony Garnier and drummer Anton Fig (who replaced Jim Keltner last year).

The surprises continued when, two songs in, Dylan dusted off “Down in the Flood” for the first time in over 20 years (last time played 10/20/05 per setlist.fm). A few songs later, “Tangled Up in Blue” made its first appearance since 2018 with a stripped-down ballad arrangement and reworked lyrics (“Way up north in the frozen woods / Teardrops touch the sky / The leaves are falling one by one / And the mornings pass you by / Sometimes it gets so quiet / Sometimes it gets in the way / Look here for another / Tomorrow’s another day / And all the while I was alone / The past was close behind / I seen a lot of women / But I never escaped her mind / And she just grew / Tangled up in blue”).

Other surprises included Dylan’s live debut of “Louisiana 1927″—his first time covering a Randy Newman song—and a second first-time cover, Guy Clark‘s “Dublin Blues.”

Dylan closed the main set with “I Shall Be Released” before capping the show with “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” in the encore slot.

Dylan’s Lights of Autumn Tour will continue across Europe before moving to England in late November, culminating with a five-night stand at London’s Royal Festival Hall. Find tickets here.
