1. Happy holiday to our Flemish fellow countrymen!

   During more than 100 years of the Flemish movement, the Flemish Lion came in many different shapes. The photo shows a selection of flags from our collections, dating from the period 1900-1945.

   ​

   Since 1973 the official Flemish flag is ‘*Or, a lion rampant armed and lagued Gules*’, meaning: a black lion with red claws and tongue on a yellow field.

9. These do look like the original designer never saw a lion in his life and was going off some vague descriptions

    But what’s up with that first one, the red flag with yellow circle. Do you have more information about that one?

11. I find the Flemish flag so ridiculous and I wish we replaced it with an animal native to Flanders, like the Flemish jay.

15. It’s a pity that I’ve learned to predominantly see this flag as a symbol of hate because it’s so often flown by racists.
