Very unfair. We are not good to people who are different in this country
It’s not fair but it’s one exam. Think of those who had to repeat a year years ago due to bereavements or long term illness because of the old rules. She still should get points for that exam atleast.
See, I’d have probably agreed with the SEC until I read that they allowed someone with appendicitis to sit the deferral so they’ve set a precedent now.
Infinitely colder responses in here than I expected.
I’m sure there is a solicitor somewhere who wants to get his name in the papers and get this to the EU courts
Disgraceful, there should be a system in place for extraordinary circumstances and even if there’s not there should be an exception made.
The ableism really jumped out in the comments. It’s clear many have no clue how much a seizure can effect you.
It’s so strange how strict the SEC are, when universities are extremely accommodating.
This is crazy.
Some gowls in this comment section.
What I’m seeing in this comment section is disgraceful. We have such a weird relationship with the leaving cert. Its almost like a form of stockholm syndrome. We all suffered with it and its like anyone who is entitled to a little allowance with it is vehemently shot down. If we suffer, you suffer too type bullshit. Typically Irish.
That is bonkers. If a seizure isn’t justification for a resit wtf is?
I’m gonna have to say it is a mean person who decided this. And at the end of the day, student will be allowed to re sit and the eejit will be laughed out of Ireland.
Well, she shouldn’t have decided to have that seizure, should she?
Jfc. I’ve never had one, nor known anyone that did, but even I know they will leave you disorientated and fucked for ages after. You don’t just have one then carry on as normal, especially with something as taxing as the LC.
What the actual fuck?
Like seriously what the actual fuck…. Absolute joke!!
It would be very interesting to know who that other kid is. Like why was there intervention by ministers in that situation? Is he the child of someone whose important I wonder!
Scumbags run that leaving cert exam. I remember one looking at me like a was a former gestapo agent because I had a drawing kit with me during my tech graph exam. The vile cunt thought I was cheating.
Madness. What is wrong with the public sector in Ireland?
Have a lot of sympathy for her. Seems they’ve ruled on the absolute letter of the law when an accommodation should have been reached. You can’t ask someone to continue an exam after having a seizure, it’s crazy. Even in that condition telling her she can’t leave the room if she wants to continue just seems cruel, how is she in a fit state to have that conversation at that stage?
Indefensible. It’s one extra set of papers.
Fucking lunacy. So that’s a failed exam result but moreover, the likelihood of her missing her first-choice course. That could have enormous implications on her future career. And not, as others might argue initially, because of an unavoidable medical condition and its side effects, but because of the ridiculous Draconian rules in place.
Life’s not fair, school doesn’t care about you, teachers and the department couldn’t give less then a shit because why would they?
I wish the student the best, but the one thing I’ve noticed in school is that they don’t help anyone out it’s just tough shit have your tried acting normal
As someone who has had two seizures in the past (none since thank god), I do feel for her. It takes so much energy out of your body and you are disorientated for a long time after.
The thinking behind this would be that the exam supervisor isn’t medically qualified so you could have an indefinite amount of resits potentially ,(if questions don’t suit for example).
Epilepsy can be triggered by stressful situations so there’s nothing to say this person wouldn’t have a seizure at the next exam, and the one after, and the one after…..
Life isn’t fair!
One of the things the article doesn’t address and I think it’s quite concerning is that it would appear no one thought to call her an ambulance?
I know that if you’re used to being with someone who has seizures then you are quite capable of protecting them until they come round, but I would assume that in a school setting calling an ambulance would be wise from a prevention of liabilities issue.
