Assuming the standing charge remains the same, that means electricity will be about 45p/kWh and gas 15p/kWh.
Smart thermostatic radiator valves can cut your gas consumption by one third for an average user from 12,000kWh to 8,000
At 15p/kWh that saves you £600 per year which is more than the valves cost. If you have the cash available it is a good investment as the lifetime savings will be substantial.
I honestly just don’t know what to do at this point.
Cold therapy for an entire nation.
Good job Rishi Sunak really went after the £4bn in fraudulent COVID loans that could’ve covered the £2.7bn cost of energy companies failing.
Oh wait.
Is this a lot?
There’s going to be some very shocked and miserable people come winter time.
I’ve been following the energy prices closely since last year and have been doing what I can, with my budget, to make my house more energy efficient. Even with all that knowledge and effort I’m still going to be stretched to the limit (or worse) by this increase. A lot of what I’ve done is probably just like fighting the tide.
For anyone else who wants to get a little prepared for winter I’ve done the following, however I can’t vouch for the relative cost effectiveness of what I have done:
* Bought hot water bottles for everyone (~£6 each)
* Bought electric blankets for every bed (~£20 for a double), probably saves money, but is definitely more comfortable.
* Topped up the loft insulation (~£75 for my very small loft areas)
* Fitted “temporary” window insulation film from Wickes (2x £5 for all my windows). Fitted this last year for winter, but have left it on as it doesn’t bother me. Has the great benefit of reducing condensation on the windows.
* Fitted an escutcheon to the keyhole on my front door to reduce drafts (£1.10 Toolstation)
* Flushed out the heating system and bled all the radiators (£20)
* Reduced the flow temperature on my condensing boiler
* Got very strict about manually lowering the thermostatic rad valves when not using rooms
* Doing less frequent laundry washes (we were doing one a day, now one larger load every other day)
Things that I still plan to do:
* Fit heavy insulated curtains in some rooms
Things such as fitting solar panels, AS/GS heat pump, external wall insulation etc. are outside of my budget. Some things I already had, like an efficient heat pump tumble dryer, all LED lighting, double glazing throughout.
I’d be very interested to hear of other people who are making preparations, and whether there is anything I have missed. I do feel very privileged to be have the time/money to make these changes.
Huh, I guess I will be sitting in the dark.
Every time I see this title the number goes up.
Oh god… This is going to push so many people over the edge.
But it’s all worth it to fight Putin!

I see no valid reason why anybody should be paying for these prices.
Need to build more nuclear power
Redditors: We want net-zero now, listen to cabbage patch girl!
Also Redditors: Why is energy so expensive!!!!
As someone with years of electronics experience including a lot of things that would terrify most sparkies, I’m *reaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaally* getting tempted to bypass the meter and just run a token amount through it so my usage doesn’t seem to suddenly just drop off completely. Honestly don’t know how I’m going to afford to live otherwise.
Maybe just ask the government for more ‘free’ money to pay your bills so we can have 40% inflation by 2025? And then while you’re there ask for more ‘free’ money to not go to work in case you pick up another mild cold. And then by 2030 they can also pay your rent/mortgage so you can officially ‘own nothing and be happy’.
Could easily be countered by everyone just not paying their energy bills and saying fuck you. Just like everyone could just stop paying council tax as a fuck you to the state of this governments decisions over the last 2 years. Or boycotting all shell garages to fuck their bottom line and force them to reduce fuel costs. But everyone is out for themselves in the UK, no sense of community.
These articles always talk about ‘typical’ customers and give estimates that are four or five times more than what I am paying currently. I wish they would just state what they expect standing charges and kWh costs will be, so I can work it out for myself. There is a big difference between households when it comes to energy use.
Baby due in November, about to lose most of my income to maternity leave, but earn **just** too much to get any help from benefits etc, AND everything is more expensive…
I’m terrified 😭
4% rise in France…. THIS IS A GOVERNMENT CHOICE
I wonder if people will start been more careful with their energy use?
Although it is just the wife and I, we are at home all day, but we never leave anything turned on at the socket until we need it apart from the fridge/freezer. We are also on oil for hot water and heating, which is more expensive than gas. And yet our monthly DD for both comes in at less than £100 a month. How much energy are people wasting? Leaving appliances turned on at the socket can cost you £147 a year. There have been people on here recently saying they have the dishwasher on every day, and shower at least twice a day.
I still don’t think the original rise has properly been felt by the population since it happened just as the weather improved.
We’re going to feel that, and then this on top, when the weather turns colder. And then we get a shiny new PM who’ll point to the last Labour government and then carry on as usual.
Well that should kill of a few thousand pensioners. This government is doing fuck all to help those at the bottom of the social scale while making it easier for their banker mates to have huge pay rises and massive bonuses.
Time they stepped up and took responcibilty.

That’s £280.25 a month

And remember to [turn down the temperature](https://www.reddit.com/r/EnergySavingAdvice/comments/ttm2vq/free_energy_saving_with_a_condensing_boiler/) on your condensing boiler to save another 10%.

“Rough Ready Reckoner based on predicted future price cap…
If you pay £100/mth now, from Oct £165, Jan £170
If you pay £150/mth now, from Oct £250, Jan £255
If you pay £200/mth now, from Oct £330, Jan £340
If you pay £300/mth now, from Oct £495, Jan £510
I’m sorry.”
Will prices ever go down or is this it? (Even if Putin died, covid disappeared and brexit reversed?)
With my current predicted cost (£4600) I’d take that price, it’s still blatant profiteering though
Time for an organised payment strike. If enough of us refuse to pay for a month or 2, that should shake them up.
Just like historical rent strikes, and for very similar reasons.
