I can’t read it behind the paywall but given Uber can’t operate here as they do in the UK or US because every Uber driver would need a full taxi license, it doesn’t appear they squeezed the Irish govt very effectively.
I’d love UBER to run in Ireland.
Anywhere in the world I’ve used it, it’s been absolutely fantastic.
Fast, efficient, cheap & reliable.
If Uber was allowed operate here we wouldn’t be in the current taxi shitshow. Safer too.
It didn’t work. Had the lobbying work it would’ve been so much better in Dublin than the current taxi shitshow.

Whilst the current taxi situation is not good , Uber is not the answer. They are finding that out currently in the USA where the pricing is going sky high alot of the time .
I don’t think alot of people would like it if they were grabbing a Uber at the end of a night only to find thanks to the price model it was €80 instead of the normal rate €20.
Have them in Toronto, there’s definitely good and bad sides but what I don’t like is the gig economy structure. It seems it pushes people to live pay cheque to pay cheque with no benefits or anything. Pretty much keeps you a contractor and dispensable and gives them a level to blame when Uber themselves fuck up. I try not to use them but we have a decent public transport setup so it’s definitely easier to avoid
I’m not a principled man but these cunts and the likes of deliveroo or ubereats are companies that I refuse to deal with due to how badly they rinse their workers. Fuck them.
If I needed some lobbying done, I’d employ whoever does the Irish Taxi Drivers Federation’s lobbying.
Reminding me of a time I was the A/V tech for a keynote by Mark Zuckerberg in Dublin about 10 years ago. All very bland and nothing really said, some generic tech speakers hoping to be seen with Zuckerberg and Enda Kenny mumbling some waffle about it all being great – and showing how little he knew about “d’internet”. Zuckerberg said some platitudes about how great it was to be based in Ireland and it was over very quickly.
When everyone was filing out, I was waiting for my assistant to collect the microphones from Kenny and Zuck and still had my headphones on, monitoring audio. I saw Kenny go over to Zuckerberg, tug the forelock, grab his hand, lean in and say, “If there’s anything we can do for you, anything at all, just let me know”. I saw the leader of a physical nation bending over for the leader of a much larger virtual nation and it was frightening, especially knowing how little Kenny understood about Facebook.
Given they have bent over backwards to just about everyone else I am surprised FG didn’t bite on Uber.
Uber needs to get in touch with Airbnb to get the lads they used.
Uber can fuck off. I never use them because if I do, I’m encouraging the devaluation of labour.
As if the government has any issue with this type of “squeezing”. The shite our media comes out with is a joke.
Guess Uber weren’t giving enough or the right
people back handers.
Business lobbies government shocker
I drove briefly for Uber when I lived in the states … mostly to see how their app worked, and how the “demand pricing” model worked. (I’m a tech entrepreneur and did it as a means to understand their business model.)
It was difficult to maintain my rating (got poor marks for dog hair in my car, and driving too fast), and the demand pricing meant going out when there was a snowstorm and hanging around congested areas (of Washington DC, where I lived) to get the premium rates.
I found taking people to the airport was best all around… about US$60 for a trip out (two of the airports are about 70km from city center), with a guaranteed return trip of about the same.
I determined that I’d need to drive 12 hours a day, 6 days a week to make the whole endeavor work to come anywhere close to a “living” wage. The cost of fuel, maintenance, insurance was just too much — and back then you had to have a fairly new car to qualify to drive, to boot.
Apparently Uber had some kind of lease-back program, where drivers would finance a vehicle to drive … that seems like a recipe for indentured servitude, as one would be driving to pay off the lease amount before even making money for one’s self.
I assumed Uber’s use of humans was a stop gap until autonomous vehicles came online. I’m not sure about that, as such tech seems further away than ever.
One of my guesses it’s because its a multinational corp and wanting to be fashionably American to say ”Omg lets get an uber, like totes. then we can go get a starbucks! Just like on the telly right Bradford?”
It’s all coming out now Mark MacGann is telling all! Uber is an evil company and must be stopped.

Only a few weeks ago Leo was talking about easing regulations for Uber. https://businessplus.ie/news/uber-and-lyft-varadkar/
I wonder why he said that…… 💰💰💰💰
