BMW starts selling heated seat subscriptions for $18 a month

  1. Soon we’re going to see a category of “No Internet of Things” tags on domestic appliances and cars the same way we have “Bio” stickers on premium groceries…

  2. How much do does heated seats weigh in comparison to normal seats? Does BMW pay me for the increased gas usage if I don’t use the heating functionality?

  3. DLC cars ! Asshole genius !

Imagine, you buy a house, but you have to pay each month to use the kitchen or the toilets. Damn, I going to start a housing business  !

  4. Assuming this is real: this is the moment when you should move to their competitors. If their sales decrease, they will have to change. But most likely people will just justify the subscription in their heads (I paid 50k for this anyway, $18 a month won’t matter/I’m not poor/other cars suck etc.) and soon you’ll have to pay for the A/C subscription as well.

  5. Pretty sure that’s something that will not be accepted by the european union or at least many countries in europe to protect consumers right

  6. So, soon, you’ll have to go to the phone shop in the dark little street downtown to have heated seat.

More seriously, this is clearly a test to see if people are dumb enough to swallow this. Not plot twist : they are.

Not to mention that, even if you don’t pay for the option, you’ll pay for the parts since they will be installed in the car anyway and there is no way BMW will give them to you for free.

On a bright side, options on german cars were already a scam, so…

  7. You own a car but you do not own a car because you can use options only on paid subscription…

I thought future would not be like that

  8. and for a little extra the bmw will automatically tailgate every car infront and we will also remove indicator lights to save weight

  9. You can use the seat heating permanently for a one-off payment. This is pretty much the same as the current purchase price, so I don’t think it’s that big a deal.

  10. If I would sit in a dealership and would order a car for quite a few 10.000 Euro and hear some subscription BS for something that is already in the car I would simply look for a different manufacturer.

  11. Lol. What kind of moron would pay for that? Ah yes, right, the kind of moron that would buy a BMW in the first place.

  12. This is idiotic, but I’ve got to say that Audi was first. Just stop buying these toxic German “premium” brands already.

  13. Leasing cars gonna be the future? Only the wealthy own cars, everyone else has to pay monthly like those truckers that get fucked.

Will be a good way of reducing emissions from driving, only those who need cars will remain suffering just as intended.

  14. Tbh this isn’t new? VW and Tesla also has features that are already excist in the car, but you need buy it or add an subscription to use it?

  15. You know what, despite subscriptions being a shitty idea in general, heating seats might just work.

When buying new BMW, heating seats cost around €1500. If you get them for 4-6 months a year, it might be more cost effective.

I’m still not stoked on those subscriptions ideas.

  16. This isn’t new, especially for German manufacturers. The tech is there, but it’s only available for an extra amount of money, usually a one time payment, but I can totally see them transitioning to a subscription model for literally anything, including the vehicle itself. Volvo, Ford, and Porsche are already tearing this out in select markets. Long story short: We aren’t going to be allowed to own anything one day.
