What is happening is exactly what was predicted by Gov critics in 2016. But instead of listening to experts, the Gov took guidance from the Social Democrats, Sinn Fein and Labour.
Even the increased HAP limits don’t cover rents.
I’ve been refused 4 times in 2 years, despite somehow finding cheaper leases for each application.
Perfectly ridiculous
one of the many failures / ignorance of our governments, the amount they spend on HAP rents instead of building social housing is insane, likewise for refugees in hotels.
The government are so confident that the private market will solve housing that they are paying 2 billion in euro in rent for people
They either believe in the free market or they don’t
Serious inept governance at present.
Seem to have forgotten that the sole job of a government it to improve, cater, and look after the country’s population.. literally the job description.
HAP has only made the housing crisis worse
I live and work on the continent and I offered my property to HAP last year. By the time they sent someone round and criticised every last trivial deficiency, I couldn’t afford to keep it off the market any longer (mortgage to be paid) and had to rent privately. The things they picked out were ridiculous like the oven not being clean enough despite the previous tenant having had it professionally cleaned and checked by the lettings agent. I wanted my property to be given to someone who was in need of it. In the end, petty red tape standards prevented that happening.
Shower of incompetents running the country. Every town is *full* of derelict houses that could be done up and made habitable. There should be a use-it-or-have-it-CPO’d law.
Its just too easy to be homeless these days.. you can lose everything and still end up in a hotel room.
Forcing *all* landlords to *say* that they accept HAP probably just makes it harder to actually find a landlord who actually accepts HAP.
For example, you ask a landlord of they accept it, and they’ll say yes, as by law they can’t *say* no. You’ll waste your time viewing the place, but they’d never have any intention of renting it to someone on HAP. Once they don’t say HAP was the reason you didn’t get it, it’s all legal.
Landlord upping the rent in our apartment block if single parents and young families. So that’s nice

What do the FFG heads have to say about this?
