> In a letter to the 1922 Committee, former prime minister Sir John Major said it would be “unwise and maybe unsustainable” for Tories to allow Mr Johnson to stay in Number 10.
> But it’s difficult to see how the party could stop him . . .
> [No Tories] are clear there is a mechanism at the disposal of the 1922 Committee to remove Mr Johnson before a new leader is elected.
There’s “very little appetite” for voting against Johnson in a Commons vote of no confidence, “and it risks a general election which the party does not want.”
The situation is not helped by less principled Tories rushing to re-fill the posts left vacant by newly virtuous MPs who suddenly discovered their moral centres, preemptively ceding to Johnson the ability to form a functioning government.
The only constitutional way to force a PM’s removal is a vote of no confidence. That would not necessarily lead to a general election – after a VONC there’s 2 weeks to form a new government before an election is mandated, so it could be done that way
No, a vote of no confidence is all that’s needed, then someone else can form a new government. If they can’t, there’s a general election.
The problem the Tories have is they can’t agree on who the next person would be, and they’d rather avoid the confidence vote along the way, but they’re absolutely not “powerless”.
My prediction is that Johnson will now try to pull us into a shooting war with Russia or something similar, and in a desperate time of national crisis will suddenly decide is is ‘irresponsible’ for him to leave.
Can’t we just deport him?
I mean Patel must have some sort of legislation up her sleeve where we can just put him in a crate and send him off to some quasi-legal rendition centre out in the African bush somewhere.
This is truly her one moment of redemption were she can gain the trust and forgiveness of the public and she’s just going to spaff it away…
Tories are showing they have confidence in Boris because it protects their power a little longer. It is hilarious how weak and spineless they are.
If the Tories can put their differences aside and have one candidate stand for leadership unopposed, the whole leadership election process could be bypassed and a new PM could be in place by next week.
But we all know that won’t happen.
No way the tories are going to risk a general election, Boris knows that which is why he’ll be able to stay.

The answer seems to be yes.
