Problem is that a lot of successful “unicorn” companies end up getting sold to Americans. The EU needs to hang on to its successful businesses.

Feels a bit misleading, these are PUBLIC companies not all companies. There are definitely private companies which are worth over $1bil. In our case those are Printful and Mikrotik, in Czechia it is Jetbrains.
