Covered California’s open enrollment for 2027 health insurance begins Nov. 1, offering Californians the chance to review and adjust their coverage.

Covered California’s open enrollment period for 2027 health insurance coverage begins Sunday, Nov. 1, and runs through Jan. 31, 2027, giving certain Californians the opportunity to sign up, renew, or shop for new health insurance plans.

Covered California is for anyone who needs to buy health insurance, but doesn’t have the option of doing so through their employer. This could include gig economy workers and those who work part-time or are self-employed.

Scott Kelley, CEO of SolV Independent Insurance Associates, encouraged everyone to carefully review their health care coverage to understand any changes and make adjustments based on their current needs.

“Do I have a different copay? Do I have a different deductible as an out-of-pocket change? Did my employer bring a new option to the table that I didn’t have last year? Should I take a look at that and consider that? How about my spouse? Has either of our employment situation changed? Do we have some new options to consider? Hospitals sometimes drop out of networks or sometimes join networks. You know, has there been a change of my providers?” Kelley said.

“So don’t just check the box to stay in the status quo, take a look and really be a consumer of your health care and decide what plan fits you and your family best based on your health care needs,” Kelley said.

For Covered California specifically, open enrollment runs from Nov. 1, 2026, through Jan. 31, 2027. Californians can sign up for, renew, or shop for a new health insurance plan on CoveredCA.com or through one of 16,000 certified enrollers or agents throughout the state. To ensure coverage for all of 2027, consumers must select a health plan by Dec. 31.

Over 160,000 of Covered California’s 1.7 million enrollees reside in the Sacramento, Stockton, and Modesto areas. Through an enhanced state subsidy program for 2027:

More than 500,000 Californians are projected to receive a state subsidy in 2027, accounting for about 30% of all enrollees. Nearly 200,000 can choose from two Silver-tier plans with a $0 premium. An additional 200,000 will be eligible for financial help who weren’t eligible in 2026.This will prevent an estimated 90,000 people from dropping coverage in 2027.

Open enrollment runs until the end of January, but to be protected for all of 2027, consumers must enroll by the end of December.
