Amsterdam’s legendary industrial landmark, the Gashouder, has officially reopened its doors following an extensive architectural transformation. Located within the Westergas cultural park, the listed national monument enters a new era as an independent, multidisciplinary cultural venue boasting an entirely new underground level and a capacity of over 3,500 visitors.
A Monumental Evolution
Originally built in 1885 as part of the historic Westergas gasworks, the circular iron structure spent decades supplying energy to Amsterdam before evolving into a world-renowned destination for electronic music events and large-scale productions.
Spearheaded by entrepreneurs and co-owners Lennart Rottier and Duncan Stutterheim, the redevelopment aims to secure the building’s permanent future as a cultural cornerstone. Rather than altering the iconic above-ground hall, the core engineering feat involved digging downward to create a brand-new subterranean infrastructure.
“Gashouder is a building with an extraordinary history and immense significance for Amsterdam,” noted co-owner Lennart Rottier. “By literally creating space beneath the building, we have been able to preserve Gashouder’s original character while introducing an entirely new experience.”
Inside the Subterranean Expansion and Design
With architectural foundations laid by André van Stigt and interior design helmed by Petra Blaisse’s acclaimed Amsterdam studio Inside Outside (led by partner Aura Luz Melis), the transformation adopts a raw, industrial aesthetic guided by the principle of ‘Ruwbouw is Afbouw’ (rough construction is the finished product).
The new underground level houses essential facilities including cloakrooms, visitor lounges, kitchens, and artist dressing rooms. Undulating aluminum walls, stainless steel, translucent polycarbonate, and exposed structural sheet piling create a striking contrast against the monumental circular geometry of the upper hall.
A Diverse Multidisciplinary Program
Under the direction of Managing Director Boye ’t Lam, Gashouder has established its own dedicated booking team and programming to bridge live music, electronic performances, art, and immersive theater.
The opening season features a packed calendar of events:
Opening Weekend: Launched with Mula’s DOMUS Live alongside sold-out performances from The Opposites.
Upcoming Headliners: Major international acts including Puscifer, Overmono, Skepta, Bonobo, and JPEGMAFIA.
Ambient Series: Harmony will transform the circular hall into a 360-degree audiovisual environment featuring contemporary classical and ambient music where audiences view performances from mattresses.
Classical Collaborations: The Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra is slated to perform Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring at the venue in 2027.
